I wish I could buy my own beach.best way to guard against those hipster surfin phags would be to run barbed wire under water through the surf zone.some of the best waves on earth are on private military bases, like camp pendelton and kamachtka russia

It's not the same thing. Hollister Ranch (and many others) were grandfathered in by the law which made public all California beaches and prevented people like this guy from cutting off access. So the original owners of those lands don't have to put in/retain public easements like newcomers do. And, yes, surfers who don't have connections or boats have been hopping Hollister fences forever.

Also, Hollister Ranch is literally in the middle of nowhere, while Martin's Beach is close to SF and SV.

Maybe in Texas, but not here, dude. We've got an "unfriendly business climate", ie; the wealthy aren't above the law and can't trample on everybody else's rights.

You're wrong. The California Coastal Act also prevents private landowners from blocking access to the beach below the mean high tide line. Public easements must be provided every 1/2 mile, or as is reasonable depending on the topography. That's why this guy needed approval to close off access (which he wouldn't have gotten), so he "didn't see" that order and now he's in court. He probably could have gotten away with continuing to charge for access (like *a****s* **v* in Malibu) because nobody would've kicked up a fuss.

You're probably right here. Hopefully he's smart and cuts his losses. Just deal with the fact that there will be surfers in your ocean view... or leave. Pretty much everybody who fights the coastal commission loses. I know of a few spots where there still are illegal access restrictions, but they're somewhat hidden and the owners are laying low and hoping nobody notices. I've climbed their gates and outrun their security guards many a time. Some of these spots... man, if your average Jon Q. surfer knew what he was missing...

Tony Soprano had a creative solution to disputed beach front property-- anchor boats in the water in front of the house and play very loud music 24/7 .

Betty, for a 60s-something dame, you must've rocked the world off the braddahs back in your debutante days with your clear tolerance for the shortcomings of the male psyche as well as your appreciation for bringing the ruckus. You are truly the queen mum of the HOF wahines.

my point is that while hip and groovy at the time, the hedonism of the 60s sowed the seeds for later problems like AIDS and drug addiction.

And herpes. That used to be on the cover of TIME mag as the next big plague on mankind that would turn everyone into wankers....now, no one even talks about it....it didn't go away, did it?

(BTW, this thread has serious potential to go into sub-orbital SI Forum off-the-rails orbit any second now.)
