Yesterday we were long boarding in pitiful ankle to shin high shallow conditions (sure beats doing chores though!) . I was walking the board out, maybe hip deep water and I felt this "bite" on my knee-- I was wearing a sleeveless 1 mm Long Jane . I thought, maybe there was a bad bug inside the suit, and just paddled out. I didn't feel a big bump like you feel when a shark bumps you. At the end of the 4 hours, taking off the Long Jane, I saw what looks like something bit through the neoprene and the knee skin had a mild mark on it. The water was glassy, I think I woulda spotted a shark. There were plenty of cute fish about 8-10" long al over the place. I am wondering what bit me. Any ideas?this is central east coast Florida by an inlet mid outgoing tide, 80F water temp, if that helps.
I've been struck by a rockfish while surfing and had its dorsal fin spines go right through a 4/3 wetsuit and put little holes in my leg
Nah! Its just so wonderful to be out there in the ocean with good friends, lots of laughs. Every surf day is fun from 1' to overhead
metard FTW once again. Betty, I'm sure you have a good reason for rubbering up. We trust your wisdom and you are the matriarch of the SI tribe. FLY A BANNER FOR AVERTING ATTACKS BY THE MEGALODON
Maybe it was a small stingray and you got lucky. Or a lamprey. I saw them on Syfy Channel. They are not to be messed with. Thank God you made it back alive. Tomorrow could be fun up there at the North Jetty, but do the shuffle on your way out.
All fun and interesting comments guys! Thanks Re the Long Jane suit: it provides zero warmth: but it protects from sun radiation, board chafing on legs, side benefit is protects from jelly stings on legs......... Board shorts for women totally stink: they are way too short and offer no protection for the legs chafing against the board. I tried men's Boardies but they look like Hell as they aren't cut right for the female shape. ... Boardies for women seem to be made for the benefit of men watching....not for surfing.
smart you are. its kinda a caucasian thing; i've had 9 surgeries for skin cancer. one of them was the "big M". smart to cover up, wear a hat; be on first name basis with your dermatologist. the good news is i'm cancer free but must get looked at 4x year.
Betty, you're attitude is a great one to have. I hate when i out in the line up and all people can say is how bad the waves are today. Seems like we forget how fortunate we are sometimes.
sisurfdogg...your right...it was fun this morning, looked on the buoy this morning 3.6@11 secs., sh!t man, I flew out there, caught some chest high clean ones with just a few people out...cant tell ya how lucky I am.
Boom. Nailed it! I was trunking it up here in southern SC yesterday. Its usually pretty murky here because of all the intracoastal waterways... But I will say, I saw a LOT of black tips... Not so much under or around me, but the wind was onshore and you could see their little fins popping up out of the wind chop right outside the lineup. A lady got bit here two weeks ago right on the foot in knee deep water. Her and witnesses say it was a 4-5ft bullshark, but you never know. Coulda been a black tip or a sand shark or whatever... either way, its spring and the sharks are plentiful all over FL and through the Carolinas. Can't say what it was with your incident, but I bet if the lady last week had booties on or some kind of rubber, it would have saved her from the dozens of stitches she had to get.... So, reason number 5 for betty to wear a wetty in the 80 degree water... Shark Bite protection! Glad you are okay. Its amazing how much wild life is out in the water this time a year. I was swimming the other day in 3-4 feet of water and felt a ray slide right over my leg. Jellies are everywhere and all kinds of little biting fish.... I definitely begin my paddle out in shallower water this time of year. The sooner I get my feet and legs up outta the water the better. ya know?
