Surf shades anyone? Anyone?

Sh!t dude I woulda told ya sooner...my vision is horrible without them. Totally worth it even if you just get 100 dailys or something to surf with.

 

Dude I was in LB a couple weeks ago and the water definitely has a different smell than I'm used to, almost a hint of pond smell to it...but yeah, after infections I'd do the same, and now that it's warmer, one days till late fall.

 

yeah I've noticed it too. Just a faint detection but I noticed. also with the dredging now... there must be thousands of dead skates on the beach.... last night the white wash had no white in it.... just varying shades of grey.

 

I've used Sea Specs in VB on those DP days when that intense spring / summer sun cranks up right out of the east into that 15th Street east-facing.
Turned blinding & painful into "I can see!" & good. Everyone else were holding hands up in front of their faces as shields from Sol.

Once the sun is up in the sky, remove & let them hang off the back of your neck.

 

Get a SUP and wear a trucker hat... All the cool dudes do it

 

Too bad most lenses don't have a rating or something to tell you how dark they are. Some pairs can get pricey and saving a few bux online is nice but I don't want to be stuck with some half azz light grey lenses.

Pterygium sucks, but I can't stand wearing shades in the water. Flares like crazy after long sessions.



A good hat is preferable.

been wearing reg rx photgreys (i get new glasses each year so i use the old ones) since i started surfing b/c otherwise i can't gauge a wave distance or height for sh!t. usually after a while, esp in high surf, the frames get bent enough to lose a lens ( i have 3 pairs of one eyed bent glasses in my collection of surf debris) or the hinkey rube goldberg system i rigged to keep them on me fails... i just plunked down some serious coin ($250+) for the silverfish rx. expect the frames will hold up better than the wire rims i usually sport. come with a lanyard for yer neck because they WILL fall off yer face, but not far. if yer not rx, they float (at half the price). consider if you have a strong rx or astigmatism the wraparounds will distort like a mther fcker and you get to add vertigo to your smorgasbord of surfing pleasure.

I have a pair of Rx Silverfish I've used for a couple of years. They do the job well and it was worth the investment to protect the eyes and see the waves. Haven't had too much trouble with them fogging. I typically treat them with Rainex which helps bead the water off quickly and prevent the fogging. The do come off on a wipeout but are tethered well.

 

Same, I get a monthly shipment of them and mine can be used for 2 weeks at a time (seldom).

 

I wear 30 day lenses and I've never had a problem. I never really thought about it until this thread. Normal routine, every day, whether I surf or not. Put them on in the morning...... take them out at night.

 

Same...when I first got contacts(20ish years ago), the dr. knew I'd be wearing them in the water and didn't say anything, I brought it up w/ another dr. at a more recent exam and he told me about the infections and stuff...the one downside is not being able to open my eyes underwater, but I guess seeing waves/being able to see while riding trumps that.

 

Yeah I use the Silverfish (and reviewed them in some other thread that I am too lazy to look up), but I use them with Crizal high-index plastic lenses with the essilor Opti-Fog coating (and anti-scratch coating). The opti-fog coating uses special drops, I rub a drop into each lens before each session and it lasts at least through the first 5-10 duck dives... supposedly there's a new version of the OptiFog lense coating that is only availably on polycarbonate lenses that doesn't require the drops
