What am I missing? I`m not doubting you but, what makes him a douche? Hes one of my favorite surfers to watch and seems pretty humble which to me is the opposite of being a douche.

 

style is bogus... look at joel... nothing like the squating stance and flailing arms of gab

 

also- ever since he lost in spain or portugal last year.. .hated that stinkface of defeat.

i hate to say this but...he's gotten better. he's not great, but not as painful to watch as a few years ago when he first got on tour. his turns have become more rail-oriented & more fluid, & he's not trying to huck the same damn air reverse all the time anymore. he may never overcome the foul, squatty brazzo stance that he grew up in, but he's less distasteful now. same goes for kolohe...used to think he was a (not very good) small wave one trick pony. he seems to have gotten his act together a bit over the last year or so.

edit: it's hard to keep in mind that these guys are still pretty young...not yet, or barely, able to legally drink here in the US. there's a lot of time for them to improve & refine their styles. had they joined the tour in the early '90s like slater, they might already be world champ.

Ahhh, so when Brazzo's drop in on you, it's not because they have no concept of surf etiquette, it's because they want to bro out on a party wave with you!

Seriously though, you can hate on this guy all you want, fact is he is a top-tier surfer and only getting better.

So he claims some waves... really don't understand people's obsession with claiming. Do you hate touchdown dances too?

Don't judge the guy because was upset after a loss, most people on here (including me) have NO idea what it's like to be under that competitive pressure at that age. Let him grow up a little before writing him off.

As for style - look at Kelly. Kelly is the best because he performs when it matters and because he does stuff on a wave that no one else can. His style is often not the best, flailing arms and looking like he is not in control. People get over it because it is simply exciting and entertaining to watch him surf. Not trying to compare Medina to Kelly, but just saying it's not like pro surfing is all about style, regardless of whether you think it should be. Also I don't think his style is terrible at all.

 

Slater to me has the best style, ever. He shows grace in waves of all sizes, shapes and locations, which no one else on earth can do like him. He looks better than everyone else in 3 foot huntington beach and he looks better than everyone else in TOH pipeline. Kelly IS style to me.

But yeah, Mendina is just "annoying", thats all to me. Talented, ugly style, but what Brazilians dont? They got into the limelight 10 years ago by pumping down the lines into airs on beach breaks. Thats all they have for the most part. The style is wack, the attitude is wack, the crying is hilarious, but the talent is there, and unfortunately for competitive surfing, "style" points don't translate into solid scoring points. They are considered, but guys get 9s and 10s at backdoor doing the pigdog, knee drop stance. Its not always how it looks, its points and whatever works.

For his scoring, i applaud him, but I like Medina about as much as I like Jamie Obrien. Talent doesn't matter when you are just a d-bag. Some of the best surfers of my generation have been d-bags, and I have NEVER supported them and I root against them, more than I root for the other half. If you want to be out in the surf #lebroning and making wave claims off your 17th air reverse only to be left in tears, with a confused sour face.... I like Obrien and Medina about as much as I like Lebron if you can tell.

Talent doesn't give you class.

i hate them obrien and medina they suck balls man, they cant even do a carolina cut back. besides they seem like tools, if i had my own mini show id do it right, with 8balls and hoes, then surfing drunk and shooting up on the paddle out, doing roids at the gym and lifting till i die. they just ***** foot around on their shows and show off wealth and its just plain boring and gay. we would go surf and shoot targets in the water off our boards with assault rifles. my show would be better than what any of yall could do. oh and sex scenes with alana blanchard are a must.

 

Kinda figured it was typical race filled ethnophobic learn english I can surf better than him mentality. Bottom line the kid rips, and this year is destroying your critiques by laying down some beautiful stylish turns and lots of flow.

 

Definitely better attitude than he's had in the past.

Like him or not he will be champ in the next few years and will get a few.
