surgeon said no surfing for about 4 months....Killing me! Paddling out just to stay (get) in shape. Anybody had similar? How was getting back?
just playing basketball (which I do about 3 mornings a weeks) nothing special, just planted to cut to the basket and "bang", had surgery that night, out of boot last week - doing some aggressive rehab now.
I ruptured my achilles on Jan 21, 2014, and had surgery on the 24th. I just returned to the water a few weeks ago. I still have some soreness and my calf on the injured side is still much weaker than the other side. 4 months is about right until you can surf again. Do listen to your doctor. Some people try and do too much too soon and re-rupture their achilles.
for the love of god....listen to your surgeon. im a surgical tech/first asst...20+ yrs in orthopedics/sports med... now with heekin ortho in jax...i coordinate the podiatry service... .we do these every week... its like sewing together to two mop heads...messy work...and it shortens the length of the tendon.. and might have a ball of scar tissue from the repair..and will lose a step in speed also...lose some range of motion.. however, follow the protocal...and you will heal on schedule...and get back to close to where you were before the injury....don't ? well..schedule your redo.now..an even nastier exercise in futility. and i fricken hate doing redos of RTC , ACL, etc...because of non compliant patients seriously, be patient , do the rehab, and you will get back to it....ocean..aint going anywhere think about giving up b-ball....maybe doing yoga..to strenthen and length... 2012...i was working at Mayo Clinic...went to help in another department... and had a excess BMI patient taco my right knee...had to have it reconstructed... it was 6 months before..i could paddle out...almost a year..before i was back up to par.. still ain't completely right..probably never will....because of my age(56)..and the other damage..peronial nerve..etc..however,... i did the work...went to rehab...etc...and even designed my own ..workouts later...yoga , st, biking , swimming, etc so ..again..just be patient..reap what you sow..and it will be all good sooner than you think.. good luck
I hear ya'll about following the protocol, etc. It's good to hear from someone who's "returned to the water". Yeah I may leave bball to Lebron and prioritize my sports/activities. Iggy - how long did you do formal PT and can you jog yet?
Rehab will focus on increasing rom and maintaining and preventing atrophy of the surrounding musculature. A lot of tendinous injuries can be prevented by proper stretching and maintaining the soft tissue extensibility surrounding joints. You probably played a lot of basketball with muscle tightness and your achilles took the brunt of the damage. Over time microtears and degeneration combined with decreased ROM can cause a rupture. Stick with the protocol and take it easy. Good luck and find a good PT.
I started PT at 4 1/2 weeks. PT was twice a week for 8 weeks. In addition to formal PT I was doing a lot at home and continue to do so. Luckily I have a pool and use it almost every day to aid in my recovery. For example I still can't do single leg calf raises on my bad foot but can do them in the pool in waist high water. I've never liked jogging so I don't do it, but to answer your question yes I can jog. My doctor gave me the okay to jog right around the 4 month point from surgery. I take my dogs for a walk every night for about 1 1/2 miles to 2 miles. I do this in place of jogging. I also use my eliptical machine and do jumping jacks. Anything but jogging.
