I'm a believer that it's the user that imparts soul on the object not the object contains any soul of its own. I have sat down with accomplished guitar players that can take my son's Chinese made toy guitar, and create magic with it. But if I could find a shaper that could make me a board that won't fall apart after a year and would hold some value I would be all over it.

sizing is a personal thing not just based on weight... i too have a potatonator for smaller days.. have a chubby chedda that i just picked up thats goes insane.. and a hellrazor as a step up.. all of them go great..

for all the stupid thailand crap.. what wetsuit do u wear.. car u drive? glass houses i guess..

did the local shaper thing years ago.. was ok but poly's feel dead to me now

GREAT POINT. are there any american made wetsuits? I personally like my FW. However, i'm not against by a local board if it suits my fancy

Wow, i am speechless. Is Lost really the only other US made surfboard company you can think of? Why don't you look into getting a Coil if durability is your primary issue. What about those Lib Techs? I have a Coil that's 4 years old and still looks new. Almost no deck crushing. You can get them custom ordered too. I see lots of people with them here in the Va Beach area and nobody has problems with them falling apart. Look beyond the stock rack boards at your local shop. Im sure the dudes on this site would tell you Coils are crap, but don't take their word for it.

Not sure about that. Point is that there is plenty of US made options. And yes, they all do big guy boards. The cheap Asian sweatshop boards are not the answer.

I was in Hawaii last week and borrowed my buddy's Lib Tech board. First thing he did when I was picking it up was put it on the ground and jump on it. I was shocked! Nothing can hurt those things.

FW…does it go better than that one?? cause that board goes pretty darn well as such has whetted my
appetite for more…fire wires, that is….

Definitely look into getting a Coil. Far superior to any Firewire. You can custom order whatever you want. Im sure there is a shop somewhere with stock Coils. There is also a guy in FL named Drew Tang. I believe his company is Inspired Surfboards. Insane stuff he has going on. The cork deck boards are pretty cool. So many innovative US shapers out there who can get a quality, durable board under your feet for the same price as a FW popout.

I have no beef with Firewire at all, and in fact I am probably going to pick up a couple.

That being said, Coils are amazing surfboards. The wait was a long time for awhile because they are so good, but the wait is not as bad anymore I'm hearing. The wait is way shorter than a custom from any of the "big boys" now. For the same price as a poly you get a board that is as close to indestructible as a surfboard gets while feeling more lively than even a brand new poly without any of the EPS/epoxy chatter.

I've had 4 that I've sold and one more that I just picked up. I've only had the old tech and haven't tried the new tech yet but I'm planning on it.

Little less than 6 weeks about a month ago.

As to the Firewire vs Coil, I currently have 2 FST Firewires (Dominator and Potatonator) and had a Spitfire. I also just received a Coil Megamind about a month ago.

Regarding the construction between the two, the Coil seems stronger and lighter. My older FST Firewires were pretty strong but my newer Potatonator seems soft and gets compression dings pretty easily. The Timberteks are so soft that you can ding it with your nails.

Shape wise, for the small stuff, the Magamind is pretty amazing. Super light and turn like a HPSB. My Potatonator is a good shape but doesn't perform as well in the small stuff. The Dominator is pretty versatile and is an early FST so built like a tank. I will be ordering a Coil to potentially replace the Dominator as well.

The wait for a Coil is 10000% worth it. I'd wait 6 months if I had to.
