Found Surfboard paradise park

Not as many people frequent this forum as I thought originally, sometimes I ask people in the water if they use this site for forecast and most say they haven't heard of it, I thought this site was standard for east coasters. Hopefully word of mouth gets out. I say if he hasn't claimed it within a month or so it's your new board. Not sure what the statutes of limitations are...

Just so you are aware, in the state of Florida the law requires you to turn in any lost or abandonded property to law enforcement. Failure to do so could result in a charge of petit or grand theft depending on the value of the property.

I discovered this after my wife found a GoPro camera rolling in the surf some time ago. I went searching for a lost & found type of thing and stumbled upon this law. I can appreciate the intent of the law is to keep somebody in possesion of stolen property from just claiming they found it on the side of the road or whatever. I'd have no problem with that except that they want you to "deposit with the law enforcement agency a reasonable sum sufficient to cover the agency’s cost for transportation, storage, and publication of notice" if you want to claim it in the event the true owner can not be found.

So, they want you to pay up front for doing the right thing or else they get to keep the stuff. Eff that. I don't know how rigorously this law is enforced. All kinds of stuff on Craiglist lost & found so they probably don't very much. Again, just a heads up that you could be putting yourself in legal limbo. Regardless, good on you for trying to get this board back to it's rightful owner. It is the right thing to do.

 

Me thinks this thread is mea culpa quid quo pro bono nolo contendre total proof of your innocence. I would paddle the board out at the break it was lost next weekend and see if anyone claims it. If no response on the internet forums you have contacted, and no response at the actual beach it was left at, it is yours to use until the guy finds it. Keep it in good shape if you can, don't take it out in closeout shorepound, just in case the guy does find you. If you feel guilty after a bit, donate a board to a kid in need.
