So how many of you guys go for some night sessions and anyone have any cool stories? Saw the most recent forecast and the windswell for weds doesn’t look like it’s going to start cleaning up until sunset. Works out for me since I have a full day of work, but the weather is looking promising for a nice moonlit session. 10mph offshores, clear skies and a near full moon phase, all ingredients added with waves make for an awesome time. I went out twice last summer with the two full moon phases we had nearing the end of the season, the one was the harvest moon and I surf clean chest high lines all by myself from about 11pm to 1am. It felt sketchy as hell, even with all the moon light visibility was still tough and a lot of waves you couldn’t make out until it walled up in front of you. Each wave ridden feels wayyyy bigger than it really is when it’s in the middle of the night, especially going solo. Get a little freaked out on what might be out there in the water with you. But having a solo session under a super clear sky with the moon and stars out, nothing beats it and takes you to a whole new level of stoke.
night surfing is cool - used to eat acid and paddle out all the time in the 70s - no worries only one chicken of the sea
Done it at night during full moon but not alone, bioluminescence going on, sketchy but fun. Also have surfed way before sunrise in early morning by myself, usually by a pier with lights, sometimes not, as long as moon is out it's enough light. Really peaceful, worth it
North Jersey is forecast to clean up early afternoon as of now. I haven't surfed at night in a few years. It's fun, but I get the creeps. I constantly feel like something big is lurking below me. Me and a few guys camped at a Central LI beach a few years ago. Pretty solid surf. Head high with a strong sweep. My friends brother, who doesn't surf, decided to paddle out with us. A set came through and a couple of us got waves and paddled back out. We realized he was gone. Couldn't see anything and wasn't responding to our calls. We went in to see if he was on the beach and he was not. Now everyone started panicking. We were looking up and down the beach for 30 minutes with no sign. Finally we see him walking down the beach dragging the board behind him. He said he took one on the head and couldn't get back out. He drifted about a mile down the beach. It was funny after over some cocktails, but it was scary when he was missing.
did it once in december about 5 years ago. it was like knee to waist high and offshore. difficult to see (obviously), but kinda cool. had a 5 mil with boots gloves and hood on. i felt safer in the winter than in the summer. too much wildlife out there in the summer would give me the creeps at night
Y'all got more stones than me. I've caught too many toothies night fishing to paddle out when the buffet line opens up. I've stayed out after sundown, but never had the balls to paddle out when it was already dark.
I've altered my life way too many times already conquering my fears. That's why my body is busted up like an old run down Buick. I think I passed 9 lives about 17 years ago... Been a helluva ride though!
That last Blue Moon we had? It was sheet glass and there were these little shin to knee high peeling Power runners at Narragansett Town Beach with SO much push and Energy in them. I was out on a 9'6 Cooperfish Hornet with pretty bladed rails and I was dropping in at an angle, the rail would catch, one step to the middle of the board, tuck and FLY down the line under that moonlight. The stars reflecting off the water would turn into white streaks...it was sick. Like 30 waves, every single one right into the beach stepping/jumping off into ankle high water and Burying the nose of my board. Grab and paddle back out. Not till the next day I saw that I had Opened the entire right side of the nose and most of the left. My friend doing the ding repair just Stared at me. Great memory of a rad longboard rush.
I hear ya bro, I have aches and pains that I didn't use to have when I was younger, I've always been a bit of a knuckle head and put my body in harms way quite a bit myself. I think you'll find that surfing at night isn't as bad as it seems though, most of the time it's all in your head when you get that feeling that something is lurking below. Sure, it's probably a reality that they are within proximity, but they aint worried about you. I still get those thoughts in my head from time to time, but I just tell myself I've logged thousands of hours and i'm still here. Do I make a habit of it? No, but every now and then it's worth the paddle out.
Most of the full moons over the last several months have had suspect swell on the day of the fully itself here in EMass. I did get an unreal sesh last October in Maine when the air was still 61 at night. Caught a great backhand right headed straight for the enlarged moon that sat over the illuminated building at G***h's. Can't wait for the next midnight wave I catch.
I hear ya DPS. Won't say I'm morally opposed...under the right circumstances...full moon, waves too good to ignore, the right buzz, and enough peeps so that I'm not the only item on the menu and I could probably be enticed into doing it. I learned a long time ago to never say never. If someone had a crystal ball when I was a kid and showed me half the crazy\stupid things I would end up doing I wouldn't have believed it. Sometimes have a hard time believing it myself, and I was there.
mayb 10 years ago myself and my neighbor scored a late spring night sesh, full moon, 3-4 ft and clean........really fun
Been experiencing more achin' lately. Not entirely due to surfing. Haven't been out since last Wednesday, but rolled and creaked and hobbled out of bed this morning. Once I get moving, things loosen up - kinda like the Tin Man, except coffee is my "oil". Age takes its toll (will be 59 next month), but I'm throwing my body (or it's been thrown) around a lot more now than it had been for years. Thankfully, I stayed in relatively decent shape. May try taking vitamins again and see if there's any difference in a few months. Additional B1, D, and E might help. In winter, I'll sometimes stay out after dusk if there's a moon. Also the Holiday lights on the VB Oceanfront Boardwalk are a nice touch when you're out on the water.
good stories peeps, it is a lot of fun but as we've all mentioned in one for or another, sketchy. going alone in the warmer waters feels easier for me, I'd be more freaked out in the cold water if something happened and I hurt myself unable to get in. Too many sets on the head with that ice cold water and I'd be screwed and disoriented. I'll take my chances tonight with all the critters out in the water. I'm surprised zach hasn't posted yet, thought for sure he'd have a crazy nighttime surf story
Not sure how much you stretch, but try making it a daily habit, do every stretch in the book on the regular and you'll notice a difference i'm sure. Epsom salt baths help too, try soaking once a week and see if that does anything for you.
