Just want to spread this picture in hopes that some street justice is brought to these two guys. Popped up in my newsfeed w/ a petition. I know Eddie won't probly see it, but the dudes pictured need a serious pounding.

well before you set these two up for a potential nature lovers beat down... are you sure they didn't find a dead turtle on the beach and pose with it? Or is it confirmed these two found a live turtle, slit its throat and started a photoshoot?

    Fingers crossed.

Yeah, everything I've found thus far indicates that they found the turtle living and killed it. Popped up in my fb, there was a petition going for them to be prosecuted. Corroborated with a couple of other sources.

unfortunately I was assuming something got ahold of the turtle and the guys found it that way. Gave them the benefit of the doubt I guess. My issue with it was I can't think of why anyone would want to memorialize their finding of a dead, throat slit turtle with smiling photos for their twitterface pages, and that alone showed a lack of respect for their surroundings.

If that were the case I don't think I would've posted...and I'm with you 110% on the lack of respect thing. In my worldview, that alone is enough to warrant some retribution. Bury the turtle and honor it.

this issue appears clearer with alcohol-fogged glasses.
put another way they probably would not have done this when the bottle was full.
things changed when the bottle was empty. (hiccup).

honus were saved for the royalties; not just anyone can eat them. back in the old days anyway. right behind the house where Robin (of Magnum P.I. fame), there's ancient pond that was used to enclosed the honus back in the days. it's still there...
seldom seen. don't have to be rothman or alexander. plenty hawaiians still believe in aumakuas, or family gods, and honu is one of them. spread the word; someone who's aumakua is a honu will see this

Pump- Thanks for the link I will be following that closely. What a tragic incident.

Gaff- I hear ya on the consumption. I have no beef with hunting/fishing(provided it's fair chase)...never took a deer but used to bird hunt with my dad. I also am equally as disgusted with machismo driven kill pics, especially when the hunt wasn't for meat(they say they eat the mountain lions, but do they?). I think it was the disrespect displayed, the slit throat, the facial expressions, etc, that really got me with this one. Especially after seeing the way Neal on the erBB and other photogs express admiration for turtles.

Spunjer- appreciate the insight and perspective, thank you.

I love turtles... no seriously, every time a sea turtle pops his head up out of the water and looks at me I say what's up, he nods his head and keeps on his way, sometimes he hangs around to watch me surf, I don't mind, they don't snake waves or anything.

No problem with killing for the food side of it. I've hunted, been spearfishing, etc.

At first glance, those dudes just don't look like they were hunting or fishing. Maybe its the tilted hat and basketball jersey.

no doubt, I definitely jumped to a conclusion without having more information. not trying to drag skin tone in, my preconceived notion was more of a speculation, but I see that it read that way.

I too wear boardshorts fishing. thanks for the call out man, not trying to be sarcastic, I appreciate that sort of thing.

From what i've seen those guys were actually Micro-neasian, and def planned to eat the turtle. As well as what Gaff said, hawaiians eat dem honu. I've heard of them still doing it out Hana way.

And to say they were sacred isn't much. They ate them. In the lines of sacred women couldnt eat half of what men could, nor at the same table/room. And you werent allowed to sacrifice black pig.

So sacred is just a term thats thrown around these days when we think something is wrong.

And to throw out there, you cant throw a rock into the ocean without hitting a green sea turtle. Theres plenty of them. Thats why they are talking about de-listing them. At the very least so native hawaiians can hunt them for food. As well as population control, because more food for sharks=more sharks.
