Sickest contest I've seen in memory, but I can't remember my name sometimes. Taj's waves were mutants, I love me some tb. So amped for tomorrow. Id be scared just sitting in a boat in the channel.
Watched that whole event yesterday...Crazy...CJ getting grabbed by that beast and being pulled over...I crap my pants in the winter when that happens to me...and the wave is a dribble compared to that thick ass monster.
Tis another bump up my fellow frothers, got about 15 mins until the webcast starts. here is an embedded feed of the live webcast, enjoy!

didn't look that bad really...just went over the falls into the whitewater. The drop by Hedge was the gnarliest drop I've ever seen there. I thought he was a goner then pulled it off. Literally air dropped into the barrel and bottom turned inside the lip of the edge of the barrel.
stinkbug, didn't look that bad? Have you ever gone OTF on a wave even half that size at a break of consequence? Yeah, we didn't see him air drop but it happened. Dude had no board at the end and the wave impolitely disrobed him of his rash guard jersey. As for Hedge, was he the 10 score from yesterday? I think I saw that clip. Agreed. I've never seen another clip where a dude looked to be eating it so bad then made it. Straight vert and then complete composure. Props to that man.
Looking so good out there again today. Not quite as big as of yet, but "Huge Swell is coming" is all over the bottom of the screen. I am hoping they can have the finals in conditions like yesterday. I can't remember watching an ASP event and feeling anxious/nervous for the top 35 guys on the planet as I watch them start to paddle in. I can't even imagine the adrenaline and the pressure out there during heats like that. Knowing it's your turn and that you have to pick off whatever monster decides to roll through the lineup next. Throw caution to the wind and say fu** it. Man, so impressive. Hats off to anyone that is out getting waves there this whole week. So heavy.
And yeah, that CJ thing was for sure worse than it looked. That is just dry reef and watch the water, on impact, it has no choice but to disperse right towards the beach, just running anything in the water right down on the reef and sideways towards the shore. The amount of force and pressure in that shallow water, with 10 feet of whitewater mowing you down and running you down the reef. Man, going over the falls had to be the least of his worries, but once he hit the bottom, I am sure he was pinned down and getting the royal treatment. He looked visibly shaken and he has been a world champ and he has been surfing teahupoo for 20 years. That was a beat down. Any mistake on any part of that wave results in one. That poor Irish kid yesterday, got blow up, held down, shredded into the shore.. The skis missed him, so he waved them off, when the set detonated in front of him, he just looked defeated and bails and got mowed down again. That this is brutal. Anyone taking a fall there in anyway deserves the hero of the day award.
that's the beauty of waves of consequence. The judges want to see you narrowly avoid death as you get shacked. He did exactly that.
Teahupoo is not a normal WCT event. And Hedge spends more time there than any of the WCT guys. He's a pure hell man.
Not saying it wasn't that bad for him. It's just not that bad looking in the video. All you see is he head on top of the wave then he disappears. The fall from Kai Otton where he just lost his balance in the trough was way worse looking, from a spectator's view. Both would kill the average surfer most likely
what I learned from watching contests like chopes and pipe is,its not as great as it looks in the video.the waves were absolutely pumping yesterday no doubt, but the lulls are redicolous.theres like 2 set waves coming in once an hour.if ur out there on a freesurf with 200 guys and theres only maybe 10 good waves coming in the entire day, youll never catch one.
And at least for chopes, the messed up thing is that it looks like the only waves that really, really even work are the bigger sets. It takes more power and size to hollow it out and make the barrel makable. So, all the non sets that they let through looks fast and dangerous with unmakable sections and too much speed to do any carving. And the lips don't stand up enough to get out of them. I think one day of shoulder hopping even on small sets there would result in impending doom.
Freddy P got hosed again and it was nice to see Brett Simpson finally make a 3rd round. Tomorrow is looking really good!
