I agree. Whether one likes SUP surfing or not, such regulation is a bad precedent. Let the lineup regulate itself. Riders with bad etiquette need to be educated/calibrated. Next will be laws against LBs, then other craft, etc. Lawyers.

Like the one dude said, get in shape and get the right board for the conditions.

This is unbelievable! Flippin' Landsharks! Say this in the most whiny voice possible, " I would like to pass a regulation so I can catch a wave". Freaken KOOK! Can you tell this pissed me off a little!

 

You know this sh!t's getting out of hand if there's a group organizing in Hawaii. It's a shame this couldn't be all hashed out without lawyers, comment periods, etc...

I encourage people to ride whatever the fark they want, but responsibly. A few weeks back it finally got to the point that i had to say something to a guy on an SUP. A buddy and I were the only guys on the peak, at a spot that is pretty much a sponge/SB wave, steep, fast, and hollow. These dudes were all over the lineup, back and forth, going on whatever they pleased. And they had no control of their boards.

A few bad apples ruins it for the whole bunch.

So, at my home break they've technically banned SUP's, at least while life guards are on duty. There had been several collisions between SUP riders and surfers. No one is policing it so it's not a big deal...they still ride, but stay at the other end for the most part. I did almost get nailed by one who wasn't watching where he was going. And don't say it was my fault...I can't out paddle an SUP, though I tried like hell.

 

I have not ridden an SUP, and will try not to for as long as I can paddle into a wave prone. But any regulations passed will be the start of the slippery slope to hell. Black balls, lifeguards with no balls, attorneys with brass balls. That clown should be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a slow leaky boat.

You know whats funny? This lawyer guy wants to ban SUP's because he isn't getting any waves. But if he is successful then those guys will just ride something else and still take all his waves. he's pretty much done surfing there for life.

 

Indeed. I predominately surf a SUP, and as I've stated in other posts, the SUP surfers at my usual break for the most part have control and understand the line up. The problem, mostly, is the *newbies* that have no clue of the lineup and safety, nor "wave type" (admittedly, there does exist clueless wave hogs -- but they aren't exclusively on SUPs). They are like "groms" on large craft. Until they learn to surf, safely control their craft, and abide in the lineup decorum, they need to find and stay on an isolated peak.

I had a situation the other day where I SUPer kept cutting in on me, trying to go left when I was already on wave and on a right. It was a matter of introducing myself, pointing out how this particular wave worked (i.e., it's a right), and where he should position himself. He thanked me and was not a problem for the remainder of the sesh.

 

As silly as it might seem to some of us, who know which way we're going before we even begin to paddle, but a lot of folks don't even realize that's something they should be thinking about/reading before they even decide to go...and as you pointed out, are often thankful for the advice.


Dudes we better start putting our differences aside and communicationg more in the water, or before you know it they'll ban swimming in 2 ft wind slop.

 

The last time I was in HI, it seemed that this SUP stuff was already at a boiling point. I never thought too much of it, we didn't have a whole lot of it on the west coast, but seriously, even on small days, the lineups were clogged with these things. And most guys out there were all novice at best. So, talking to the locals, especially one bar tender at the local watering hole we were frequenting, he went on numerous "Laird Hamilton" rants. he showed me the letter to Laird that he carries in his pocket at all times, just in case he sees him. And he just wouldn't let it go. He was saying, Laird introduced SUPs to the world. SUPs ruined Maui. LAIRD RUINED MAUI!!!!

So, I don't know, this whole idea of SUP regulations is garbage for sure. But it is interesting that they have such strong feelings about it, especially out there. Since, correct me if I am wrong, it was the Island's that introduced these wonderful wave riding vehicles to the rest of us.

I mean, if it's all that, why don't the locals just put signs up in the lot "NO SUPS" and regulate it themselves. If a guy starts SUPing out, kindly tell him that SUPs are not welcome there. Seems like the practical thing to do. There are spots all over HI and CA and OZ that regulate themselves with regards to what boards are ridden and what aren't.... Seems like they should be able to clean up their own mess and regulate their own sh**. That is kind of their whole thing I thought. So, if you are all about localism and protecting your breaks, I don't think that five oh needs to be helping you.

On a lighter note 1 week left of summer, and approaching tis the season we wait all year for. SUP or no SUP, everyone loves fall.
