Not a fan of SUP's in the lineup. Having said that I've only seen two guys that actually come close to surfing on one. (They both can and have surfed for years ). Most other SUP's just screw up the break for everyone else. I've thought about getting one to paddle in the harbour and creeks but I would never paddle out in the lineup with one. Agree with the other posts about the fact there are d*cks on every form of board in the water.Generaly don't have a problem with most seasoned surfers/SUP?bodyboard ect. A little respect goes a long way.

A SUPer ruined my session this morning. Clearly fell into the, "I never surfed before this," category: shorty suit with booties on. Paddled for all of the biggest set waves. He'd either get them when I was in perfect position to actually milk the most out of a wave or he'd mop his heart out trying to get into one and I'd be in a bad position by the time I deduced he wasn't getting into the wave.

I started my session sharing waves with just one other guy who was on a SUP. He actually surfed beforehand and was a cool and respectable dood.

Just goes to show the opposite ends of the SUP-spectrum.

I see both sides y'all but how many times have you found a desolate peak, you see the SUP crew paddling up the beach and the moment they get to you they start trying to catch waves. Successful or not, they do.

I believe they are just like a lot of "surfers" I see around here...they know nothing. They think it's always flat until they see you on a wave. Obviously you have a magic spot they think in their Forest Gump like mindset that is more "full rere" than anything.

My theory of vb and a lot of places...people don't look for waves, they look for surfers.

There are good SUP riders but they are few and far between.

The only ones I will show no courtesy to in the lineup are sups. I have blatantly dropped in on them and when I don't it's because I'm resting. Lol.

I don't really get guys who can surf SUPing instead of surfing when there are waves. I've caught plenty of waves on my SUP but only when I'm coming back in after going out paddling around, chasing wildlife, etc.. And would never even think of bringing it into a lineup. I've got an 11'6" glassed performance SUP that's very fast and nimble for a SUP but still way too much board to be screwing around among other people, esp. a lineup.

If there are waves I'll catch one on the way in then go get my board. Way more fun to be surfing than paddling that beast around catching stuff. I can understand the ones who don't know how to surf or maybe have a physical problem that prevents them from surfing (with my knees will probably be at that point some day), but I just can't ever imagine looking at a decent wave and saying, "nah, I'm not gonna surf, gonna SUP it instead..."

I guess maybe it goes with what gaffer said, they'd rather up their wave count. Personally I'd rather surf ten waves than SUP twenty.

With the size of that board + leash I've got a +40ft diameter circle around me I could clobber someone with. I can tell from experience it doesn't feel good to get hit with one of those things. I'm not going to be the guy to injure someone just to up my wave count.

Surfing gets easier over time. But for a first timer it’s frustrating. You want to be able to rides waves right away and experience it the same way the competent guys do, but that likely won’t happen soon for beginners. It takes weeks, months, years even. People nowadays want instant results! Apparently there is no time for paying dues to yourself, to nature, to the line-up.

”I want to be riding and enjoying the waves now!”

Therein lies the appeal of SUPs. Especially people who do have the mental patience of a 2-year old. Couple that with the heavy marketing campaign in Outside Magazine, Men’s health, etc. and you’ve got yourself the SUP dilemma.

The SUP is a crutch for people who can't surf unless it's for cruising around bays or rivers.

oThis goes back tothe chicks that dig surfers thing I saw on here. Everyone wants to be a surfer. I don't even classify myself as a surfer and I go A LOT.

You're right, the people these days. Everyone wants to be classified and to be classified as something/someone cool.

How many times have you talked to someone not living at the beach, they have seen you surfing and say, "you live here and surf? You are so cool." Dude, that's funny. It's like the "oh, you're from Cali, your are so cool." I know a lot of D-bags that live in locations like that. WTH??? I know cool people inland as well.

Everyone wants to be a beach person. Why do you think Salt Life is taking off?

Most people never find themselves, but they quest to be cool. Most people strive to make a lot of money. That way they will find something they like. It seems to make them pretentious as well (at least where I grew up).
Eventually, they have their money, but they aren't "cool". They think, "surfer's are cool" subconciously. When they roll up on some surfers and start taking waves from them, its "I make more than you you poor b**** and take your waves. You think you are so cool but I just took from you what you covet most." Sure this isn't everyone, nor is it always a conscious thought, but from what I have gathered from living in this world, a lot of people are that way. Then they can go tell everyone how they surf and get all the benefits from that.

I love it when a surf bro that lives in Richmond wants to tell me what's up...OK buddy, beat it before I beat you with your hipster sunglasses.

Dude, your parents sent you on a couple of trips and now you can talk...

Here's what I want to pose, what makes you more of a "surfer"? Going a lot but riding a lot of mediocre waves in the process or riding 50 good waves (tops) a year?

I once read a post on here (but I'm not going to look it up). It was to the effect of being good at surfing does not make you a good surfer. You need to know how to do everything aside from the ride.

That is a good explanation. The inland crowd and yuppie hipsters are all into the SUP trend. They fork out the large amount of cash for the winter gear now too just to go a few times. I can't stand this crowd. The are easy to spot right when you see them pull up to the break. I don't drop in unless it's a certain situation. SUPs always warrant a drop-in from me. They then move and I can start surfing again.

I started surfing on a stand up because of a rotator cuff injury. And even though I take part in the sport I hate 90% of people that participate in it because of their lack of knowledge of the discipline of surfing. That being said, there are a few respectable people that surf on a stand up. I tend to surf at spots where there are not many surfers in the water so they have plenty of space and also so I don't have to listen to their comments. When I am with my friends that are traditional surfers, I am able to call out waves for them because I can clearly see the horizon. Also the discipline of standup is a little more difficult that you might imagine. I ride a board that is shorter than many long boards I see in the lineup and there are a lot of guys going as short as a 7 ft sup. The way I see it some people just aren't meant to get along, so Ill stay at my spots and leave you traditional surfers alone. #blamelaird

I feel you through and through OP. This last swell, I had to tell an SUPer to beat it. Dude was probably in his late 50's, and I could tell didn't have much experience surfing. He was taking off on EVERY bomb that came through, paddling right around people to get to the peak, and burning people with no regard.

Eventually, I went up to him and told him "I'm not trying to be a ****, but you gotta go somewhere else". Immediately about 3 other people chimed in agreeing that he needed to GTFO. I really felt bad doing it, and tried to be polite, but this guy was seriously ruining everyones session, and it needed to be stopped.

What really sucks, is that like 4 out 5 SUPers are like this. They are just old guys, who take every bomb with no regard for other people. If you are the exception to the rule then I apologize, but for every other SUPer... y'all can just choke on a bag of ****s (sorry)...

I have just decided to paddle for any wave that I can get into when I am up against a SUP'er.

Just get behind them on the wave and stay close to the shoulder. I let them know that I am going left or right and drop in so that I am not getting in their way.

I have let too many waves go bye when I am on my 9'0" soft top letting SUP'ers catch the wave and have had it.

Short boarders should be free of SUP bastards most of the time since you are more inside most of the time.

At some point I think there will have to be an area for SUP'ing away from swimmers and surfers, or it will get ugly at some of the smaller beach breaks.

As you can tell I do not see myself on a Stand Up Paddle board anytime soon, but it is easily the fastest growing segment of surfing.

Was flipping channels recovering from surgery. Stupid travel channel had some silly show called "Bikinis and Boardwalks" and part of it was promoting SUPing. So they show three girls labeled "Boardwalk Enthusiasts" (gmafb) going SUPing. Not a single freaking one of them had a clue how to do it, at all. None. Couldn't even figure out how to hold the paddle, no leash, stayed on their knees getting dumped over and over and kept running into each other and falling off (and giggling).

And the show is acting like these idiots are some kind of ambassadors for SUPing. That's one of the problems, its being pushed as easy and fun with hardly anyone trying to show people how to do it properly, safely, and to stay the f away from lineups/people/etc.

    Stupid stupid stupid.

And yes I know travel channel sucks in general. Boredom and narcotics leads to bad decisions. After the "Boardwalk Enthusiasts" were done (and unfortunately no one lost a limb) they then switched to promoting the Wavehouse in San Diego. Over and over and over about how it was exactly like surfing! But no sharks, yuck yuck yuck.

I tried to throw something at the TV but missed. Damn painkillers screwing up my aim.

Ive surfed with some very good SUPers and some very bad ones. Some share, others are hogs and annoying. When one drops in and goes one way off an A-frame, then I'll take the other direction and suddenly they've changed direction and coming right at me. Ive SUPed on the river and that fun. When I was at Malibu they were all hogs and pissing everyone off.

    watch out for this.
also swell size can quickly change the game...
sometimes the only game in town is a good athlete duck-diving to position to.....ride.

I admit to paddling, but never in decent conditions (SoJerz has plenty of small, crappy days) and never in a crowded lineup (OCNJ has plenty of small, crappy peaks away from the main areas). This past long weekend had all sorts of conditions and i ended up surfing 5 boards, 2 SUPs and a sponge depending on tide, wave, wind, etc. Its another arrow in the quiver but needs to be used prudently.

On the plus side, it is pretty good at clearing out some space on a busy beach day. If I slalom that oil tanker through the bathers and spongers a few times, they clear out for the wife, nephews, etc to surf #bulldozer

had one guy recently, 'round 280 lbs, on an 11 ft sup go right on my left wave...that really pissed me off, if i didn't look mid-pop and sit up instead i coulda been annihilated by his board and his fat arse...

but i've seen and been out with some good ones too, and occasionally they'll snake a wave because they get to sit so deep, but the good ones will know what they did and give up the next one to you

from what i can see, it's the simple fact that it takes far less athleticism to simply do it - however, there are some really good surfers that hate the hassle paddles for 2-3 footers and opt for their sup instead and are cool about it....but then you get the ones that can afford it and want the easy activity/wave - those are the dbs you gotta watch out for

come 'cane swell & fall/winter they're generally outta the water though

simply put, complex problem with an easy solution: be courteous or MakeItStop and the mob will give you the stink eye and read you your rights!
