You have some balls to take on a shark of any size, hope you're alright. You learned the hard way not the mess with sharks.
That sucks bro. Glad your okay. Where I live, I can't ever fish WITHOUT snagging a few black tips, anywhere from a foot to up to 5 or so. Never gone out deep to fight one in. How deep was the water where this happened? We try and always get them completely out of the water before messing with them and trying to get the hook out. I trip out even holding a little 2 footer around the gills. The go limp for the most part, most of the time, but I always keep on my toes in case they make a quick move.
Anytime I have grabbed the tail of a shark it has swung around and tried to bite me. It's like grabbing the tail of a snake, you gotta pin them behind the head or your gonna get bit or close to it. Try being dumb enough to lift them into a boat, then your in for some fun.
Yeah it's been dubbed "the shark bite capitol of the world" but it's not as bad as people or the media make it out to be. Been surfing there for years with no problem (knock on wood). They are there, and people get nipped from time to time, but it's normally minor, some stitches and back in the water for most, no deaths.
Pretty ballsy, but i don't understand what makes new smyrna different from any other place in florida (concerning sharks)
just replied about this in the other thread....I was at the orv entrance driving on when they met him at the ambulance...they were doing cpr to him there...it was wierd cause they had put him in the ambulance for about 10 or 15 minutes before they left...i was hoping he just came around. Got pulled over by a ranger...warning for no seat belt...I asked about the gentlemen but they havent heard of anything.
It's the Inlet, it's a breeding ground, so when these little baby sharks decide to make their way into the world, they come into the surf zone which is right next to the Inlet and the water can be murky at times so most times it's just a case of mistaken identity, a little nibble and they go on their way (usually). The bigger sharks are present as well, but you never really hear about them biting anybody or doing any severe damage. Not to say it can't / won't happen, but 9/10 are smaller sharks that are disoriented in the surf / murky water. Lots of spinners, black tips, sand, nurse, the occasional bull, reef, etc., can't say I've ever seen a GW in person, but i'm sure they've been in the area.
mvickers, damn i feel for you, man...hope you heal up good...any one of us could have made that mistake... show some empathy. Hope Bob didn't die....and I don't even f^ckin' know Bob.... where the h3ll did this all happen?...up by the front?...cause i was way down and never saw any of this I saw a bull and it's fin came up and cruised 2 foot in front of my board in CR. and to add, you don't surf New Smyrna without expecting to get bit...it happens eventually...luckily, I don't frequent the spot often, so far I've come away unscathed....but you talk to every guy out there and he's got a story.
Thanks to senior Dude \ Well All I can tell you.....is try catching a wave while you are going down on your MUFF...might get a better rush,..,...thanks dude for your help and sermonette that you so needed to respond to....behind your pc.,...you're a dynamo....for sure...(yeah)
Thankfully, Bob Parsons is alive and doing well. http://delaware1059.com/story.php?id=11519 This article pretty much sums it up, so he is alive and well, not to mention everyone who helped out that day saved my former mayors life. Thanks to everyone.
