So, yesterday, sitting on my long board, something fairly large came up and brushed against my leg. I was at North Side, Indian River Inlet. My guess is that it was a ray, because I"ve seen them out there this summer and it felt like it could have been a ray. The water was merky yesterday, so I didn't see anything. Kind of freaky... Anyone else get bumped by some marine life?
back when I lived on the gulf, I surfed in a school of rays. They were simultaneously jumping out of the water...one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Then I moved to folly beach, SC...some little perch-type fish swam up into my underwear and got stuck. Took forever to get the fish untangled. A big hammerhead swam right under my board on a super muddy day...didn't touch me. Out here on the west coast, sometimes baby seals will play with your leash...super cute, but a little scary because you're always thinking they might nip you in the leg.
had a view of a school of stripers twice as i surfed over them, looked cool. not quite as exhilarating as your experience though, thankfully.
same exact thing happened to me on weds morning. i was surfing alone, in murky water and felt something oddly big brush me. I told myself it was a ray or a big jelly
A tarpon blasted my board while I was laying on it with my legs up since I was in the middle of a school of mullet, and as the school was passing by, WHAM!, I got sent six inches in the air above my board then landed back down on the deck and almost $%#^ my shorts. After laying there prone for a minute, the school passed, and I caught one to the beach and left. I think it was a big tarpon because I saw a few earlier, and saw no dorsal fins while the school of bait passed by, but you never know.
I was surfing N end of VB and drifted into Ft Story. The water has really weird vibe but the waves were great. It was dusk ish and I was "one more wave"ing when something hit the bottom of the board hard enough to lift the nose a little. I was ashore before the nose dropped.
Something bit my foot at Assateague National; it was large enough to get most of my foot in its mouth, but didn't have any teeth or hurt or anything. I kicked something big with my shin on the inside later on that day, too.
Something with a hard, bony head bumped into my leg once while I was out sitting on my board. I have no idea what it was, and I really don't think I want to know.
I was surfing in la jolla during hurricane Marie. Something latched on to my leash. I thought it was kelp so i give it a little tug. I got a tug back then pulled back a few feet. Unstrapped my leash and paddle in with the quickness!
Big Honkin' ray steamed right past me on the inside at Guiones in CR. Twin fin, like a fifties caddy.
I actually have had this happen to me when I was surfing Sebastian Inlet. So many bait fish there. They were jumping out of the barrel onto my board. Crazy, but less freaky then something huge brushing against your leg.
