So the ASP is changing its name to the WSL (world surf league).
how incredibly corny does this sound?
It reminds me of the superhero cartoon Justice League of america.

But the ISF or IPS sounds reasonable...meh in 5 years and nobody will think its odd. If it relly is an effort to increase viewership...well see next year. However, such a niche market...name change may help...but I'm more interested in upcoming changes after the name...LINK

they should change the name to corny little ***g1t tennis soccer baseball wannabee league.asp really sucks its like sell your soul to us so we can pay u to surf shytty waves and broadcast it all over the world.this new asp system is breeding a new age of wannabee surfers and kooks.u thought the lineups are crowded now,in 2 years youll have an additional 50 newbs in the lineup with 9ft malibus crashing into each other like the Kentucky derby

World Surf League? That's one if the worst names I've ever heard.
Sounds hokey. Like a pro wrestling league
The other worst being "outer known"
The third worst being "Purps". It sounds like a std.
No originality left in mainstream surfing. Sad...

honestly, how could they have done any worse haha. asp sounds way better, looks way better, and should remain the name. the asp has too much history and heritage... sucks for pro surfing.

I think the bigger question is why is everyone so resistant to change in all aspects of life? It hasn't always been asp waveslider, used to be IPS (much like UPS, NFL, ASP, MLB, and A/S/L)... without change things become stagnant.

Its annoying to listen to people ***** and moan when their work makes changes that don't affect anyone in a negative manner, if anything most changes make things better. Its even more annoying when fans of sports complain that their sport is changing something stupid that will never affect anything about said sport. Just like anything else in life, popularity goes through ebb and flow, dont blame the asp for kooks, blame abercrombie and those who put on shows like surfhouse.

It is just a name people, surfing still involves the same **** it always had.

live4truth said it best, but 5 years is a bit much, I bet once its changed it will only be a matter of a few contests before people forget about it and they continue to enjoy their HD webfeeds, edgy VZ commercials, and micro-brew of the month.

Ugh... Not a big deal to me. ASP was a TERRIBLE name from a marketing standpoint. Only people within our community even know what it is.... If I called 5 of the top sportcenter commentators and all asked them if they know what the ASP stands for, they would all 5 day, Nope... Even though they have ALL covered it on a minor level a few times....

Who cares. I don't like the term "league" because that implies a larger scale of inclusion and that it is some sort of team/league when it is just an individual contest platform. The PGA is not a "league". Track and field is not a "league"....

But oh well, I think it is a step in the right direction for what they want to do. Its short, sweet and to the point.

    World Surf League....

the new head of ASP was the head of the NFL's marketing for awhile. expect to see more and more things that take surfing into a more mainstream audience.

& a larger & larger disconnect between normal, everyday surfers & what goes on in the professional realm.

"world surf league" is pretty ****in' bad...WSL, as it'll be called, isn't too bad, but still cheesy. & like zach said, "league" implies inclusion & diversity where none is present. but who knows, maybe in a few years we'll have the Wave Garden Pro sponsored by Home Depot or some ****.

well, lets get up to speed.

    1) whack your wife
    2) switch your kid
    3) "come out" as a marketing ploy
    4) promote dog-fighting
    5) we need an 'oj' - any nominations?

I just don't see where people think it will communicate better what ASP is all about. Which would be pro surfing. It is an association of surfing professionals. And as you all have said, world surf league implies inclusion of regular a$$holes like ourselves, which is frankly ridiculous. Pro surfing is d@mn near a different sport from what I do when I paddle out.
