kelly looked good then not. medina looked hungry but the costa rican took him out (??!!?).
catching a whiff of fanning/parko victory here...

Owen and John John are going absolute nuts. Owen's 9pt ride was so smooth and effortless. Same with JJF. Throwing tail slides and reverses over and over on the same wave like its nothing.

Carlos Munoz was a shocker against Gabe but Gabe still looked solid. I wouldn't count him out considering what hes done this year.

All in all, I am stoked to see some more!

so far so good. if carlos was a stock they'd be buyin/price going up....in the heart of 'surf city'
is a good place to peak; especially career-wise. can't see him beating jjf on level playing field though...

and bede loses despite showing everybody (again) how to throw spray....it would seem the judges (again)
    are favoring the air game.

Really fun looking heats. I love chopes, but trestles always exposes ones true style and overall ability level. Just a blank canvas waiting for you to paint. A bunch of backside hacks just wont cut it. But on days like this, there are also those huge floating sections, so you can't just tip toe around it either....

So far, the lulls are bad, but the set waves are fast, long and tasty. Really letting these guys get off. Nobody is going all that aeriel, because the size and speed is a bit too big right now. Everyone is waiting for that last closeout inside section to hit a little reverse. Have yet to see anyone really push the envelope today. I want to see someone go backside 360 off that first section with speed and height, then string together some power turns. That is a 10 today.

you could catch 1-2 inside waves and still have time to get back outside for the set waves

Haha. TOledo just did this. HUGE backside 360, landed it, got one more smack in, then claimed it... Shocker.... He did exactly what I said though. Toughest maneuver on the most critical section of the wave. I will give him credit for that. sick...

Haha, and they gave him a 9.83, not a 10. I think they gave him -.17 for claiming it.

just seen that,im still at awe of mellings 9.17.i was rooting for melling until I seen that score,a low 8 at best.Toledo should've got a 10 if melling got a 9.17

slater did the craziest air lol, looked like a bail but he landed it

striders a fukin legend, cant believe he landed a job with quicksilver with all the crazy partying and illegal shyt he did in the 90s.I can only compare strider to someone like andy irons,he never did the contest thing, but when it comes to macking pipe and macking chopes, hes the man on top

Agreed. In his day a party and surf animal. But now? Corporate stiff - at least on screen.

Yeah, Toledo opened the flood gates and set the precedent for a 10. He hit that air on the first section, which is the fastest and heaviest. Only deduction I could see is that he got kind of hung up on the top when he landed, but damn, how else are you supposed to land a backside 360 that went 5 feet up off the lip. That is a 10 in my book. Now everyone else has to follow suit. We could see a rodeo or something legit out there in these conditions. Perfect landing pad.

yea hes a horrible commentator.a lot of great surfers turn into sellouts, but if they are paying id take the job.look at shawn dollar,a pretty good bigwave rider,he sells reef sandals lol.its easy work but it makes u look like a total kook who didn't make it as a freesurfer
