Im about to get my license and i am torn between what car to get. My choices are a jeep grand cherokee 1997 or a vw gti 2000. they both have cool features but i want your opinions on what would be a good surf car
your obviously going to have more room for boards in the cherokee. If your just looking for style, then thats another question.
obviously you need one of these: http://www.2ndlight.com/fusetalk/fo...d=65473&highlight_key=y&keyword1=surf vehicle
smaller is sufficient went from an 89' wrangler which was siiick for cruzzzin and but had a limited surfboard storage. No more than 2 boards for sure, one behind the driver seat placed vertical and the other the same way behind the passenger.(unless you have some kind of rack system) Jeeps are jeeps, and they are the most fun vehicles a young, searching, curious driver can obtain. (especially with the off-road breaks like Assateague and DE. Chose to sell mine on ebay from financial obligation! Still regret it to this day! Got a ford ranger from there and this was the ultimate easy access surf vehicle. Just throw countless number of boards in the bed of the truck. Limited seating though which means you could only bring your best bud and maybe another if he wanted to cram in the back. butttt it was mad easy for someone to lift a board or two out of the bed due to poor security (never happened) Fun till some ***** pulled out on me and I t-boned the hell outta her. (totaled) These two vehicles (jeep wrangler, and ford ranger) if nothing else got me through some of my best sessions. Summer of 07' went with the first 'car' that I had driven yet. I was was hesitant to get a small car due to my past history with trucks and suv's. When i totaled my truck i was given a smaller car (dodge avenger) and it turned out to be not so bad. I have a 08' Ford focus. that isn't flashy or able to get me to crazy rustic 'secret spots.' It does allow for me to carry 3 boards( with not after market expenses) and 400 miles to the tank. Right now thats whats most important for me. Gas being so much more reasonable than my past two vehicles. (price wise and mpg) Its all what your looking for! I think that one board and wheels to get you there is far sufficient than any flashy automobile that i clearly can't afford now. God i miss my jeep.
hahaha i used to have a 1997 grand cherokee was pretty sweet could take it on the beach drive where ever ecspecially when roads were flooded but got a bout 15 mpg plus my friends always wanted me to drive cus i had room. I sold that and got a 2002 vw gti and i prefer that much better. I cant drive on the beach anymore and have a little trouble when roads are flooded but the seats fold completly down in the back and ive fit 4 boards with one passenger. I go to school at Monmouth and now i can make day trips to Long Island for less then $15 bucks or LBI for less then $10 when the cherokee would of cost me close to $50. I'd go with the gti but the decision is up to you both are good surf vehicles but i prefer my gti over the cherokee any day of the week.
truck get a chevy silverado with the z71 package. my dad has one and is nice. because we can go on the beach tow however big of a trailer we want and put how ever many surfboards i wanna put in it. but when i get my licsense in 8 months then thats what i will drive when he's nit using it. but once i get a car its gonna be a mini van. so i can put my gear in it and wouldnt have to worry about it being stolen. but if im going to the obx then i would take my dads truck so i could take the jet ski and drive on the beach and wouldnt have to worry about getting stuck.
One time I used my work truck(large box truck) to go surfing, and realized it would be a perfect rig for surfing. I would love to get one especially for that. You could build racks in there and carry several boards, so you would have a selection to suit whatever the waves called for that day. Also you can get in the back, close the door, and easily change into or out of a wetsuit. Hell, you could even put a mattress in there if you wanted to. Only downfall is the gas bill.
they both r sick cars but i am realizing now there is not enough room in the gti to get some poonany back there where the cherokee u can fold down the seats and have some room to get it on but thanks for the feedback guys
very true i have a jeep cherokee and porsche 944 turbo both great cars but end up driving the jeep more often.
Get an old ice-cream truck. Lots of room for molesting small children and smuggling weed past cops. Kids will come running if you pull up in a neighborhood too. Everything you'll ever need.
