Flying up in two weeks and renting a car. Plan is to stay in Portland area and do some driving and surfing along the coast. Have hiked in Maine but never gotten to the coast. Looking for some tips in the right direction but even more so, someone who wants to surf and let me buy them a beer at a good spot in Portland. If down send me a message and we can coordinate. Monster coastline. I've never surfed it, but I remember being up there as a kid seeing some monster waves smashing off shore cliffs. Fair assumption it gets serious at surfable locations. New England is funny though. Keep your eye on those reports. Hampton went from 3 feet to 9 feet and hollow in a matter of hours recently, and nobody saw it coming. As for water temp, bring your winter rig. It never gets warm. Never ever. Teeth chattering cold.
He's not kidding, but that doesn't happen often if ever. Monday was truly amazing. As for Maine, if you want to play it safe, all the beaches in Downeast Maine are good, from York to Kennebunk. They'll always be colder, and less crowded than the breaks in New Hampshire. If you're feeling adventurous, north of Portland isn't really talked about or popularly surfed. There are some more known breaks that you can find in seconds on Google, but the other ones are fickle and off the beaten path.

" If you weren't looking at Jeffrey's Ledge buoy (44098) then maybe you'd have thought it was only going to be 5-6ft tops. But that float was showing 8 and change on swell height at 12-14s all day bro. I saw that early on and hit the break a few hours before the buds were scheduled to come up because I knew it may drop any minute after that. But it didn't. When tide dropped out and that swell was still mad large, those faces got muy grande. That's why Spicoli got straight billeted in a shack at the home break that rarely goes hollow. To da OP: bro, once you have all your notes together on where you think you'd like to hit up in Maine, drop me a PM and I'll give you my thoughts on your plan. You'll have a great time up there. I'd say you want a 5/4 if you're not used to cooler temps, maybe 4/3 if you are. I'll still be in my 3/2 for a bit, but I'm not human and I'm a bit south in EMass.
must drink: novare res...just a flat out MUST do for beer. bull feeney's if you like whiskey (not cheap, but cool ambience...met tony hawk here one night a few years ago on a sunday night. he just walked in -the place was dead- with a few pals). must eats: el rayo, salvage bbq (beer list is remarkable), nosh, front room, hot suppa! (breakfast, gotten a little pricy though but cornbeef hash is amazing), silly's for variety and veg/vegan friendly, otto, congress street bar and grille for solid drinks and cheap good entrees, sonny's same as the last mention, eventide oyster bar outta this world with good beers, slab, ---- best part, all of these places are about a walkable 1.5 mile from one another! i probably forgot a ton, and haven't explored everything, but this list'll get you started. i'll probably be outta town on business stuff, but each place i have surfed (and it's only been a handful) has a super-mellow vibe for the most part and very tolerant, just know your role. temps fluctuate a lot...one day out and it's real warm, next day offshores and my feet were icicles - shoulda gone with the 3mm booties. oh well. but for everyone else ---- swells suck up here and it's way too cold. don't bother coming up, it's not worth it.
Ugh spicoli did not get barreled, I've seen him surf.. muy kookie. Others can attest to this fact, this dude is not what he cracks himself out to be. Glad he's blowing up our quiet spots up in Maine to any non-face on the internet. This dude sucks.

I'll 2nd Hot Suppa! There's no other place up here like it. If you make it up to Brunswick there's a Thai place called Sweet Angel that's outstanding. Do the Allagash brewery tour, it's free and their beer is a must. And most surf spots up here are listed on maps, especially on other sites....try Higgins if you want to surf with 60 of your closest new buds in a small lineup. Still in a 3/2, just started wearing boots again. Good luck.
just got back..We left and drove to Portland for breakfast at the holy donut. Check surf nothing so we kept going up to bar harbor.Stayed two nights right outside acadia. Sunrise at the top of cadallac mtn. is epic...lobsters and beers in town and a place called Mainely Meats with Atlantic Houe.Real good bbq and IPAs.When we left we cruised route 1 and found some spots on our way to York beach.We stayed for a night and surfed long and short sands beach both mellow vibes on everything. Wore a 3/2 just for the mornings lucky we got 80 deg days.
