What do you think? Seems like people will surf 8ft mavs with a mega gun, helmet and inflatable life suite while guys on the North Shore will be doing fins free turns on 15ft sunset on their standard shortboards.
both waves are serious, and I dont think you know how to measure waves sunset will hardly ever get 15', 12' max (25 foot face), then channel starts to close out or get wonky
It's more than just the size of the wave, there are legit dangers there like the big boulders on the inside, the long paddle out, throw in some GW Sharks and dangerous deep waters with stong currents, even on a "small" day and it's no joke. Seeing this in person was eye opening for me, dudes were paddling out without inflatable wetsuites though, that might be a bit much on a smaller day, but better safe than sorry I guess. I bet most who would criticize those folks wouldn't paddle out along side them.
When you start talking about waves of any serious size I would imagine it is better to over estimate potential consequences. Mavs does have a number of other factors aside from wave size.
Even places like big chopes and pipe and other waves people tend to treat like less of a big deal than mavs.
Just the walk from the parking lot to the water is enough to psyche someone out I would imagine. Walking by memorial after memorial of guys who have died there is pretty trippy. Can't say I blame anybody for being cautious there.
