Because they are shallow. No need for an inflatable vest at either spot. If you drown at either it will be from getting hitting your head and getting knocked out. An inflatable vest won't help... Look at the guys that take it "too seriously." They are the best/craziest in the world. If they feel it's necessary I'm sure it is

Mavericks plays tricks on the mind. It looks way less severe than it really is. Most of the waves there don't get that hollow, so to the naked eye, it's like, ohh, thats not that big. Thats not that heavy. But when mistakes are made there, they are deadly ones. Many waves looks meaner than Mavs, but for whatever reason, that thing is just haunted.
Yeah was just curious why it was so visually confusing. I'd rather surf pipe again than hit mavs any day.
below is a line up shot of mav's. that playing area is HUGE. not to mention the water is sub 55 and there may or may not be large aquatic predators around below you. Mav's is legit scary.
In person, it's absolutely terrifying. Too many factors to even list. I chickened out of trying to surf there when I was young and certifiably insane. Only way I'll go to Mavs is to watch other people surf it.
il put it like this. slaters first wave at 12ft sunset,he popped up in 3 seconds after his wipeout.his first wave at mavs he nearly died, mavs contest btw when slater finished 2nd. sion milosky, dominant big wave surfer, recent days before inflatable balloon vests, died.mark foo, died. thing about mavs,if u ever watch water angles of the wave,it drops, rolls, then morphs into a completely other wave(inside bowl).not too mention 50 degree water, great whites, etc. I saw flea was doing water safety which is really rare, and shawn dollar tweeted for flea to jump in.i give flea the credit tho,he is mavs,2nd under jeff clark.to this day there is no better big wave surfer than flea, not shane dorian, not greg long, not mark healy, not even greg knoll.many years ago,mid 90s,theres video of dorian(long before he turned into big wave surfer) talking about how much respect he has for flea for paddling.when I started surfing,we didn't really have internet so id watch movies I bought from the surf shop and there was a lot of mavs vids.flea handsdown gnarliest surfer/waterman that ever lived.wiping out on 60ft waves, yes 60ft even bigger, going over the falls with the lip without a safety vest.do u know how deep that must put u,coming down with 60ft of water?no way I could survive.oh yea he was on drugs the whole time too.i know that's why he doesn't surf mavs anymore,it brings back hard memories,he was the man at top of mavs, but flea the person outside of surfing had many many demons
There is a dope special that aired on ESPN a few weeks ago. 30 for 30 maybe? It was an hour long show about big wave surfing. Following various riders to various events, including Mavs. Shane Dorian talks a lot about his near death at Mavs. I DVRed it and watched it like 5 nights in a row. Good show. Side note: Anyone ever see that B rate movie that Shane Dorian was in? He plays a big wave surfer. And it all leads up to him going down to Todos Santos. The only good part of the movie the end, when he actually does a film session surfing pretty big Thors Hammer. Not sure the name of it. In Gods hands? I know he was in that, but that was a doc I think. This was a B rate movie, where he was actually acting, and I think playing himself... So corny, but so sick.
very last wipeout flea over the falls
I've surfed semi-serious Wilderness in Puerto Rico and experienced a near death hold down when I was at my peak fitness at 28 years old. That was conditions equal to the smallest most playful days I've seen pictures of at Mavericks. I'd call that day a little beyond double overhead with a crazy 3x set every 20 minutes. Real Mavericks No thanks even when I was at my best. Might be fun to paddle out there and sit way way out on the shoulder and catch a couple of giant mushburgers just for the experience. Wouldn't want anything to do with the peak.

if u are referring to that video I posted I do not know.theres some wipeouts u see and can only think no way is that person going to survive, but the crazy thing is people are dying by falling on the takeoff.i always figured the aftermath was the worst, once youv wiped out and have 4 50footers rolling in right on top of u.they say most big wave deaths are from getting knocked out,not from the initial hold down as id imagine. I read in slaters book, slater, dorian, and Donnie soloman were surfing big waimai, slater and dorian made it in,soloman wanted one more or couldn't get into the wave to get to the beach, and they saw someone trying to paddle up the face on a 30footer and they didn't make it.it was Donnie soloman, died from that wipeout.and todd chesser, one of the gnarliest beings to ever live, died trying to paddle out to alligators because waimai was too crowded with kooks they said.i don't know why I still fear 8footers lol but I do,feel like a puzzy watching these other guys but then again I don't get sent around the world to chase swells
