so, on google maps, it looks like once u get south of sandbridge in va beach, the coast is greyed out as if it is a wildlife reserve or a military zone. is the whole strech of southern va coastline off limitsfor surfing? what about over the nc border? can u surf the whole coast down there or do u have to go down into the corolla area? basically there are 60 miles of coast between va bch and obx. I want to know if its surfable...
the area beneath sandbridge is back bay wildlife refuge. back in the day you could camp back there (and surf as well) but motor vehicles were prohibited. you had to hump your stuff in by foot or mountain bike. i never surfed there, but did bike there a lot. it's a cool place. it's where all the ducks fly south to and is full of millions of ducks and geese during the winter.
dude, i would not go here. Not sure that its true or not, but apparently there are still a bunch of live landmine's down in that area, thats why you can't drive there. I sure wouldn't want to be the one to find out if the rumor is true or not.
land mines? that's kind of gnarly. one would think that by 2009 the military would have gotten some metal detectors and dug up live bombs. that's nuts. so, that is either a locals way of scaring of visiting surfers or a pretty crazy truth. at any rate, is it still surfable today. lets say I take a mountain bike, or hike by foot. can I surf there? at the end of point loma where I live, there is a military/wildlife refuge that protects a 5 mile strech of reef. so, u can surf these reefs;but is illegal to step on the coast. so bassically, we have to anchor a small boat right by the lineup, then take the boat back into the bay when we r done. so, I understand the coast being off limits, but if one is adventurous, could I paddle out somewhere between obx and vb?
almost 100 percent sure you can surf it and if you cant, im not saying breaking any laws, but no one is going to be down there to stop you. my dad used to ride his bike from va to nc all the time down there. its a really interesting place dont know about 60 miles worth of uninhabited coast but at least 15 miles or so as it eventually runs into corova which is only assessable by 4x4 on the beach from corolla. the landmines im not thinking are true because i know they allow residents from corova to evacuate through back bay in case of a large hurricane. the surf... well it would be fun to ride down there and have waves all to yourself but quality wise its probably going to be about the same as sandbridge.
i've surfed there before it gets a little bigger than sandbridge but it is very fickle also. i used to go back there in middle and highschool with all my buds just wander around found a gigantic sea turtle shell about the size of an old vw bug one time. your not going to find an amazing wave to your self though that no one knows about people go down there every day and not to surf because they know little island pier is the exact same without the hassle or you just go to the outer banks
that's the same kind of sign we have on the south reefs here. but like I said, its boat accessable and legal that way. so land mines and beach aside, is that coastal water off limits?
who cares Buddy, why waste your time the waves suck up there. The sand bars are shallow and it is always smaller than places south.
Yes Mlp What up Mlp, You know me, Somtimes I just get fired up when I read complete nonesense on the web. I mean who really gives a Sh__. This guy lives in SD and he's wondering about the Va coastline. Somtimes I just get annoyed, I am truly sorry. This thread can be hard to swallow at times.

I am not sure if there are still land mines in the area or not but I do know it could be possible because a couple years back, two "treasure hunters" landed there boat on a penninsula in Hampton Virginia and got blown to bits and died.
hahahaha. see told ya. Ya I told my mom i was gonna go check out the waves down there one time and she just freaked. She told me I would probably get blown to bits by landmines, and she has lived in VB/Sandbridge for her whole life, so i believed her. So take it from my mom, a long time VB local, that their are landmines down there. And plus whoever said the surf is crappy there is right. You would be much better off just going down to pea island. If an uncrowded peak is all your lookin 4, you can always find one there.
