What does it matter what other people will do. If YOU were cold, put on a warmer wetsuite. This isn't junior high where you have to worry about how it looks.
No, this is wrong, you definitely should not put on a thicker suit, you should shiver through your session and then cut it short because of hypothermia.
^^^ Wisdom here. We're all different. I'd have at least a 3mm full suite. IDGAF if some Eskimo is amused. I'm built for the heat. At work, I run, literally run, around on new hot asphalt parking lots when it's 100++ on Texas summer afternoons. Many folks would get heat stroke. Don't bother me. COLD effs me up big time. My 5' 9", 135 lb, 56 yr old a** can't deal with cold. Wear enough to be warm, or watch from shore, I reckon. OK, I'm up to 140 lbs. Been eatin more taters lately.
I went from boardies and a 1mm top in Avon on Friday to my 2mm wool lined Pat suite (3/2 equivalent I suppose) in OCNJ on Sunday morning. Ten degree water difference and 20+ air. I was toasty except for my ears which were cold as hell after a couple of hours with that wind.
There are p*ssies down here in PR wearing wetsuits and the water is 84 and air in the mid to upper 80's, nobody says anything to them, you shouldn't worry bout it, do what makes you feel good
You loose 30% of your body heat via exposed head - a 3/2 was perfect yesterday, with warm water and all, but unless you cover and protect the cabeza from the chilling wind gusts, you are going to gradually cool down ... same happened to me - despite warm water.
Early AM air temp at the house today was 42. Coldest in about 6 mos. 48 at the beach. Water temp 68-69. Shorty suit was OK in the water, but it was a chilly walk back to the car. Noon sesh air temp was a sunny 63. Low 70s tomorrow. It's getting time to patch up and ready the 4/3 for one more winter.
I have several 4/3s with varying degrees of holes in them that get me through most of the year. Summer suit is a shredded 4 back zip from a few years ago. Would've been perfect on the day in question. New England fall wind and cloudcover make me feel 10x colder this year. Last year I wore a 4/3 up until December. By now I've gone straight to a sixer for ME/NH. Maybe I'm dying? The lobster mitts and winter boots came out already but only because I have holes in my gloves. It's like this- Every time one gets out for a snack or to warm up one misses the set of the day, so now I just dont get out.
You'd be amazed the difference a cap makes on a cool windy day like described. Also, not all 3/2 wetsuits are created equal. Some are incredibly warmer than others.
I would think a new(er), quality 3/2 would keep you warm. Regardless, wear whatever suite you feel comfortable, and like others said, screw what others think. It's about you being warm, and getting waves. Nothing else.
unless u wanna get sponsired, u hav to wear boardshorts all year round. sponsirs r looking 4 gangster surfers and bein cold is gangsta
my 3/2 ripcurl has lamby fur. which i think works. oh, and, HI doug....where 'ya been? righteous surf here sunday - hope you got some too.
