    re: sugar mt

Sugar Mt. is the best mountain in the area and also the most expensive, not by much though. If you are a begginer stay on the brown lift. I think it is the green circle lift or something. Its pretty long, but if you happen to advance really fast( no offense, most likely not) go up over to the yellow lift or red lift for intermediate slopes. If you are going to rent dont do it at sugar, it usually cost more and you get crappy equipment. Go to the bottom of the mountain to Alpine Ski Store or the one across the street.
    P.S. Have Fun!

i agree sygar is probly the best in the area overall but the last two times i went, iy has been extremely crowded to the point where it wasnt much fun. something else worth noting is their bunny slopes. they have an extremely easy one with a magic carpet lift, and this is where it seemed to be the most crowded. all the moms were standin in the middle so they could record johnny and susan on their way down. it seemed to be more of and obstacle course than a bunny slope. the next easiest slope was up a ways on the mountain, and can be very intimidaring for a beginner. first you have to take the chairlift(very hard and scary for a first time snowboarder), and the slope itself has several drop downs that arent bad, but can be intimidating. once you get enough experience thiugh, the rest of the mountain is fun after the lines for the lifts.

appalachian has two beginner slopes that dont require riding a chair lift. they are both in between the difficulty of sugars bunnys, so that can be a good thing. appalachian has turned into a snowboarding center after so many years of no boarders at all, and all the little park rats definitely show up with their attitudes. you also have to watch out for the boarders on one of the bunnys at appal bc the trails merge halfway down.

i woupd say appal is better for beginners( my gf liked it much more her first snowboarding trip) but since u have a place at sugar, by all means stay there since it is close.

Cricha, I used to live about 30 minutes from Sugar and Beech in NC. I prefer Beech, especially the past 2 seasons. They hired a team of new Groomers from Breckenridge and they are top notch. The snow at Beech has been so much better the past 2 years at Beech. Sugar in my opinion is not worth it. Its a bit more expensive and there are about the same amount of slopes. PM me if you have any questions man.

appreciate the heads up but the condo I am getting for free is at Sugar so chances are slim that we will go anywhere else. The most important thing about the trip is letting my little girl enjoy the snow. I will get a chance to try snowboarding but dought I will be able to tell the difference between good snow or bad. just want to try cuz everyone has told me for years that I need to. have skated, surfed and waked my whole life so I'll probably get just good enough at it to hurt myself....hope not but knowing my history and lack of patients it is real possible

we are going in February. is it possible there wont be snow? i know they make it. in the winter months does it ever get warm enough to completely melt all of the snow? in other words, do i have to worry about there not being snow?

In Feb., it is unlikely that "all" the snow will melt. Worse case scenario, there is no new powder and it warms up - then you will have a great deal of packed ice. If they groom it, it will be like boarding on a gravel driveway. Best case - it's nice and cold with lots of fresh powder and you are @ Sugar with 100000 of your closest friends.

Rent from somewhere in or around town before you go. That way you are not stuck with whatever the shop at the mountain has...which is mostly crap. And, if there are good conditions, they may run out of boots or boards or both. Sweetwater has some decent stuff (if you are close to ILM). It won't hurt to call around your local surf shops.

Wear mittens and try to hold something in your hands. IF you fall a lot, you will be trying to catch yourself - falling on that hard packed stuff and catching yourself with your hands is a good way to break a wrist or your thumb. If you don't fall a lot, then good on ya.

If the condo has a hot tub, USE IT! And, have a pint of Butterscotch Schnapps to pour in your hot chocolate...not too much...just enough to warm you up and help you relax.

I am sure some bloke on here will blow me up for my post, but this is just my two cents.

All that being said, if your daughter is the focus of the trip, make sure she is having the most fun even if that means bagging the board. :)

Great suggestions. My kid will absolutely be my first priority. Hope to spend no less than 4 days there. so I should just fall on my....whatever is closest to the ground and not my hands. I wouldn't get much done at work with a broke anything much less a hand or wrist although it would not be a first thats for sure. Thanks for your help. Whats ILM ?L8R

Hey man you'll be fine in Feb I've boarded up there way into march and still had fun. So some advice on snowboarding for a beginner. When I was learning I found it easier to make turns on a little steeper slope. The really flat greens can get kind of frustrating. So maybe try stepping up to a blue or steeper green after a little while. It becomes easier to trasition from edge to edge that way.

that makes since. like in surfing you need to generate speed to complete a manuever. Its mostly likesurfing rail to rail shifting weight from edge to edge to steer, cutback, so on... Right? i also hear it takes a while to get used to the bindings and the more centered stance....alot like wakeboarding

Don't be afraid to carry a stubby philips head screwdriver with you so you can play with the placement and angles of the bindings. You can move one of your feet up or down one screw or change the angle one notch and it could make a world of difference. They put all those holes on the board and notches in the base of the bindings for a reason. Maybe start with your set up like you would on a wakeboard and then play with the width and angles from there.

That is a really good point about the steeper slope because the slower you go the easier it will be to catch an edge...and, face-plants suck on that NC ice.
