Zach, you know very well why blue states aren't targeted, buddy. The federal government can't make a state accept drilling off the coast. They can make plans and suggestions, but enough powers still remains with the states to keep it away. The feds know this, so they aren't going to target states that put up a fight. As for Obama, he has always been pretty moderate. His war and environmental policies have always been somewhere in the middle, which make it strange that the right hates him so much. The local media in Charleston is fairly liberal, but that is because this city is a political outcast for the state. The media can definitely be owned by the left or right, but I wouldn't call that a conspiracy. There are still fairly neutral news sources out there. Many of the scientific news sites and journals are research/data based, which keeps them in the middle. I don't do repairs for corporations, Chinese, Indians, or hillbillies. They don't pay. I also don't do tunnels.
I am presently publishing a yachting and sporfishing guide in Charleston. There is big, old money, well connected in that busting port city. Same with HHI, same to an extent with Myrtle Beach/NMB. Lots of exclusive waterfront developments(Kiwah, Wild Dunes, Habortown, etc) and oil drilling off their beloved coast and estuaries (The Low Country) is not on their agenda. If they were educated more to how badly their lifestyle and culture would suffer (granted, many could afford to buy islands in the Bahamas), I think many would send messages to their political cronys to drill somewhere else.
Tell them in a language they can understand. "Your property values will go to sh!t and to get out you will have to take the loss."
I'm not sure if these issues are always a "Blue State / Red State" sort of thing. Certainly, Blue states are often clanging the bell about "renewable energy" such as gigantic windmills to generate electricity. However, coastal Washington residents (considered a "Blue" state) are on the fence about offshore windmills, because they are considered unsightly and they present a sort of environmental impact as well. I guess when the nuts hit the bolts, what it really all comes down to is how much $$$ an entity or corporation is willing to pay to shut up the politicians, whether they be Red or Blue.
