Ohh, and I hate the ideal of the ugly as$ DTV or DISH on my home, but luckily, the front of my house faces the ocean, so DirectTV has to point it towards the woods out back to get a proper feed. A few neighbors have them and you can't even see them really because they are tucked behind palms in the back. I hate driving through neighborhoods that all have ugly ass dishes on the roof out front.
That's awesome! I read somewhere a few years ago that service companies conducted a bunch of studies and found that it costs them waaaay more to get you back as a customer if you leave for a competitor than to just give you a discount like they did. Works for all sorts of businesses (cell phones, cable, etc).
And there is a hidden equation in both the cellphone industry and cable/sat... They gauge each other and the market on customer retention. So, yes, not only does it cost more to get a customer back, it gives them a serious ding within the industry. So, the more customers that are lost each quarter are a direct reflection of their service, pricing and business models. So typically, on that final moment, when you actually say "Yes, I would like to cancel my services"... they will put you on hold and then throw the kitchen sink at you. That is my next move. In the late 90's I worked for "Cellular One". Anyone under management status could give up to $500 credits, no questions asked and in certain cases, upper management would literally give people up to $1000 in free credits, same as cash, so certain accounts would get over a year of FREE service just for staying. This was also in the days of roaming and other towers and people getting bills that were $400 more than expect because their phones picked up the wrong towers.
Ding Ding... We have a winner. DirectTV: Great channel lineup (No HBO) a master HD DVR box for the living room and a mini HD box for all 4 bedrooms that can link to the DVR from every room. $51.00 per month for 2 years. Boom The girl on the phone says she uses the $19.99 a month TW internet. That is savings of $130 per month..... Lesson here: It costs FAR less for satelite feeds than all the overhead the cables companies have running and maintaining cable lines... The Cable companies just can't compete with the cost. Glad I did some research. $1560 in extra cash per year is enough to fun a couple runs to PR.
I made the change to Roku and an antenna about 4 years ago and don't miss cable at all. The biggest sacrifice is sports, but most NFL games are on local networks, and therefore available via antenna. Bottom line, I was watching too much TV before, as was my wife. So easy to do when you have 100's of channels. Cut the cord, hombre. You'll be glad you did. The added benefit is you'll be sticking it to Time Warner. F those bastahds.
Living without cable is liberating for the mind. I didn't have cable in my house for 8 years or so, turned it back on last year b/c I have roommates. The controller is intimidating.
The Dish thingy can leave you with roof leaks once you get rid of it, or so I've been told. I have never had cable. I have Netflix, and occasionally, if there's something I can't wait for Netflix to get, like Sons of Anarchy, I'll just buy it from Amazon or Google Play.
We discussed this show briefly in the Bootie alert thread. Great show, but it's getting a bit heavy with all the male arse crack appearances. When do we get to see Jema's boobies?
