http://www.zigzag.co.za/featured/a-shameful-day-for-south-african-surfing/ Pretty disgusting. If this happened in my area, I would assemble a few friends to teach these douchebags some manners. I mean, it is completely disrespectful to do it in a normal competition, but to do it in a competition that is only women and little girls is just disgusting.
wow. they usually dont. ok - here it comes: the devils advocate. who are they to rope off a portion of the sea? they are ambitious to say the least; thieves to say the most. I DONT APPROVE OF THIS. however; if surfing was a car w/3 round wheels the fourth wheel - competitive part - would be square. basketball commands competition; surfing only - and this counts - for the right wave. other than that it is not a competitive (well, at least mano a mano) sport. yet we see the behavior prevail. i never competed for 2 reasons; sure, not good enough but also i'm too big to bottom-wiggle 1ft waves. what sealed the lifetime deal to stay away from it was the type of phony that competitive surfing attracts. they make me sick. the local high school surfing coach recently bragged to a local newspaper that he didn't need to know how to surf to teach it to the young-uns. this public behavior is VILE! and prevalent.
I just put that in there to encourage your participation in the discussion, BTP. Anyways....seems like common sense ain't common in our world & that's what led the way to a near-total breakdown in that South African lineup.
Purposely dropping in while women are competing is bullsh1t. I can see maybe scoring a few waves between heats, just being funny or something. But dropping in on them, that deserves a spankin.
I agree. I'm siding with the devil. The ocean is the last frontier of public property. So an agency sets up a competition. A bunch of people pay to enter, a bunch of dudes make money off of it, and a bunch of dudes who wanted nothing to do with it have to sit on the sidelines of their own break? One would think that acquiring waves in a traditional surfing environment would be a natural part of the "competition". Don't drop in on a 9 year old girl for sure, BUT... If you're closer to the peak then hop on it, competition be damned. If you let that 9 year old girl snake waves from you, she is going to blossom into that wave snaking surf goddess that rips and wont eff you, who teaches surf school lessons and willingly pushes kiddos in on their boards and cuts you off, then winks at you because she thinks that because she is hot she doesn't deserve a railroad spike driven through her face forever disfiguring her and making her unable to commit such heinous ocean crimes ever again. I'm just saying. Dont drop in, but dont give her a pass either. I showed up to the beach on a small day and only one spot had one peak working, and there was a competition. It was a charity competition, totally for fun. I was actually too broke to enter. Some lady that took herself way too seriously in the competition was enforcing the boundary and being a C about it. It really put me off.
I agree with all points made so far. Walking the middle of the road on this one but I will say you don't drop in on 9 year old chicks, dat is messed up. Now 18 or older it's alright to slide in a "backdoor" shack once in a while.
Dude, you are so right. Surfing reminds me of NATURE (great show on PBS btw). If you, for instance paddle out and have the dominant peak and are dominating it, that group of 5 guys is likely to keep their distance (unless no one has made it a point to keep them humble). Once you let a wave go by, they will move in. Its like they sense weakness. One day I was out surfing like that and my girlfriend wanted to paddle out. She wanted me to go to a different spot that she could surf since I was doing a steeper wave. Anyway, these "bros" are keeping their distance. She asked me to paddle over to her, I missed one wave after about 40 minutes of having this spot dialed, and then they descended. They couldn't surf well by any means, but they perceived that they could take the peak. It happens faster if they are skilled. Point being is this, people need to be humbled. I know it has worked for me and countless generations. It has made me a nicer guy; I am sure of it. I bet those 9 year olds thought they were better than those other guys before they were snuffed. For the record (pardon the FANBOY), I didn't watch the video. I am convinced that I am right and couldn't possibly be wrong. In fact, I went surfing today and the rights were blissful. No one else was there and I know I am proud of the inability of most to read buoys. Bouys bouys bouys. I bet those 9 year olds can't read buoys. Perhaps they will learn now that they must adapt to the increasingly competitive world of surfing. Will they start the 2nd Boer War over this??? I am curious. Perhaps if they did, they would earn more respect in the lineup...competition or not. NOYA!!! These kids need to listen to Blood for Blood. Then they will understand. These guys sound like Ds to me. They are a necessary evil though. Do you remember when you first started and there are those guys that gave you no respect. Then you progressed further to the point when they dropped in, you got right up on their A. You let them know with confidence that it is your wave. Don't be afraid to challenge them when they are in the wrong. To this day, I regret every time I let that slide in the past. No need to be a D, just be confident and know you WILL NOT LOSE AND WILL NOT TAKE ANYONE'S CRAP...that is what these girls need to learn. Crush your opponent or be crushed. What happened to this attitude? The local news (Channel 3 in VB) interviewed local collegiate athletes from other nations recently. The best foreigners sought to crush their opponents and let it be known. The Americans were all about "my team" and "honors". They were losing to these foreigners. Let's take the world back starting at your local break. USA USA USA
S Africans are ducks not as bad as Brazilians but they are extremely aggro I've surfed with a lot of them. The most racist people of all time. Yes I'm sure there are a lot of great ones as any culture but they are no where near as cool as aussies, new zealanders, etc.
My encounters with Afrikans from the south is they are very aggro. A couple of kids beat up a trannie with their skateboards and killed him because after he bought beer for the underaged hoods, he hit on them an they killed him. They were out on bond, pretrial, and got caught burning down a beach service shack. Served aboot 3 years and are out and menacing people to this day, in and out of the water. Don't drop in on 9 year old girls. just don't. I just want to state that for the record. Surf contests have been around for a long time, and have given us great moments and rivalries such as Andy v. Kelly, the Kelly/Rob high five, JJF v. JOB v. Media v. Fanning etc. Mostly irrelevant to every day blokes, but still amazing spectacle. If it is the only place breaking that day, I can understand the locals being upset about access. One of those things we can argue pro and con for ever. But please, no dropping in on 9 year old girls. No bueno.
yeah isnt it so sad that rcarters wife has ebola? i know right, but maybe if she didnt spread her crab infested legs to every soon to be porch monkey coming from africa then she would have been alright. .... well she never was alright actually, always on the corner of every street tryin to get her meth money so she could escape reality; the fact of being married to a crackbaby abanonded by his family for having a face resembling an elephants prolapsed anus.
