Also looking for 5mm. Anyone Got a half-size rule for booties? I wear 10.5 in just about everything. Also Flat Feet and a bit wide. Some buddies of mine said If you're half size go up with O'Neil- Can anyone else confirm this? What about Xcel. Rip Curl?
7mm round toe. February. Boom. For me I don't like my big toe not having any friends when it gets that cold cause he gets cold easily and he's also awkward and uncomfortable by himself. I like to let the have a party In the boot when I surf (all 5)
How bout wearing a neoprene sock inside the bigger size? Will keep you extra warm too, which would offset the greater space, if any. I haven't had too much experience wearing boots too small, can't see that being great. However, NEVER again will I wear a size too small in gloves. Especially not in mitts. Try that out and see the pain in the forearm muscles being clenched in awful ways during the whole sesh. My first pair of used 7mm mitts my first season were mediums and they hurt like all hell. Rubber needs to be form-fitting, no doubt. That said, too tight will cramp you and cut off circulation, at least in the hands and maybe the feet.
My leash has a tendency to get stuck in my split toe boots. Going back to round toe when these die next winter. As far as gloves, I can't paddle in them. This is my 3rd winter surfing and I just don't feel like I move water when I paddle in gloves. Thank God the nerve damage from numerous bouts of frost bite numb my hands so I don't need gloves. lol plus water here seldom gets colder than upper 40's.
Glad I'm not the only one out there that's had their toes flossed via leash. Hey...MATT JOHNSON...you'll be pleased to know I just copped 5mm Hyperflex lobstah claws for a smooth $27 including shipping. Boom.
I cant believe you guys don't get the internal split toe booties, its the best of both no leash snags still together with your other toes and not isolated to cold but the internal split allows for better grip.
I checked mine at home. It's not a true internal split -my bad on that. however, the sole of the boot is one piece, with a molded split, so no leash snags, and still have the split toe. My favorite cold water booties by far. I only have 7 mils cause as I get older I find I have less tolerance for being cold
As for gloves, my 3s are gloves, 5s are lobster claw, 7s are mittens. My pointer finger always gets cold in the lobster claws. Like mittens way better if were talking warmth. As for boots, never wore anything but round, never had a problem so just stuck with that. I don't really notice a difference bare foot vs boots while surfing, as far as grip and all that goes. Actually my 3 mil boots are holey 7s. For me it's all about warmth. If I'm about to paddle out and I'm like "ehh I can get by in 5mils" I'll just throw on the 7s. Seems like allot of guys try to wear the smallest gear possible. Not I. I'll wear what ever is the warmest.
Its been said already but round toes and mits are warmer cause all you toes and Finger are together building body heat . When you separate them they are not as effective in keeping warm
With Dry locks I roll my Sleeves up , fold the wrist part of the glove down and put them on . Fold the wrist section over and then roll the sleeves over the gloves . It take a little bit but worth it
Because with something like wettys in cold to freezing temps, a combo of top performance, comfort and safety is something you trust and stick with. Drylock everything bro. Then again, as evidence by the H-Flex claws purchase, I'm willing to try out different brands at the right price. Further, I just got that 2mm SS fullsuit by Hurley for $80 when it retailed for 230 and am stoked to try it out in CA this weekend. I respect that there are several valid brands out there worth buying and wearing. I wouldn't be against trying RC F-Bomb gear at some point and that is probably my next direction to sample if I do sample others. As far as I am concerned, if you get a good deal on higher-end neoprene goods that fit you very well and come from any of the major manufacturers, you're doing pretty well and are basically all set. Anyone have the RC F-Bomb boots (5s and 7s) that have the straps up on the calf? Does that make a difference when you get flushed? When the boots start filling up with water, and they always do, that's the beginning of the end for foot comfort on a real cold day.
7s. Don't even bother with 5s. Warmth = more time in the wata. Also, no splits. Splits split. Then you seal em snd get a stabby Aqua seal clump that gives you're finger/toe joints irritation. Full mitts!!!! Indeed a brilliant idea. I think the dude with the Christians Ronaldo avatar explained it best-- rolls up sleeves first, glove one on, slide sleeve over, glove two, slide sleeve over. When that fails, ask a stranger st the beach. Make up some like like you have a sprained wrist so you don't look like a jerk. I'm 99% sure I have the 7s but I'm not home to check. It doesn't keep your feet dry though. If the strap were that tight you would lose circulation. My boots are just pee buckets anyway. When I get flushed my body produces a natural warming agent called pee and it sorts things out.
Don't use the teeth neither. Easy way to piss away 50 bones. Rolling back the cuff of the mitt helps and you push your fingers in far before starting to roll back to the wrist. The opposable thumb and index/middle fingers of the other hand helps greatly also. I'm right-handed so I make sure to put the right one on first as my non-dominant hand has even less dexterity when coated in 7 mils of rubber. There's an idea. If you neoprene-glued the split together, would that be a poor man's internal/external split-toe? Would it make the toes any warmer having them clamped together with the glue? Bro, it's flat. The mind is simply spinning with ideas. Damn bruh, I don't like to talk to anyone on the beach in the dead of winter. They're either wacko, lonely, on drugs, or all of the above. I'm expecting to be fully dependent on myself on days like that. Lol yes. But you're robbing Peter to pay Paul because your piss soaks your feet and those hooves of piss get real cold quickly in the freezing water and that's the beginning of the end. It's like the soldier who is wounded and dying, he stabs himself with the opiate stick to relieve pain but that's just killing him faster by a variety of means. Still fun to piss in our suites in the winter and the cats that only paddle into warm water know not what that divine feeling is like.
