It looks that way because of acid. nail on the head. I had a fluorescent orange and yellow 5'10" squashtail rusty with glassed on fins in the 80's when I was 10. hahahaha.

I am reliving the 80s right now. Watching lots of Alf and Full House. Listening to Genesis while playing Genesis. Drinking clear coke which is doing wonders for my backside hack. THWACK.

Surfers trying to sell themselves maybe? Trying to look different but ending up looking the same? Just like tattoos today I reckon. Or riding a Harley -or owning anything that says HD. Or starting a hair metal band. You know, purchasing the "look at me kit". Until someone successfully calls BS on it then it starts all over again with another LAMK. The very definition of fashion. Just us tryin' to get laid. Look out, here comes another bandwagon....

Snowboarding was the same way. I still have my florescent orange Kemper Rampage board and my black and purple wizard hat; very fashionable but not very practical... And then suddenly all the boarders were grunge... subdued colors lots of plaids and flannel... Fa Fa Fa Fashion.

It was Devo and the B-52s with their videos and goofy outfits that fueled the neon rage.

Surf style goes in cycles. I've already been through several of them. The black wetsuit/white board cycle is slowly going into temporary hibernation, while the spastic neon stuff is coming back. It will also be short-lived and temporary.

Assuming you're talking about the black/blue striped fin, that is a Dewey Weber "Hatchet Fin". It was standard issue on the "Weber Performer" model. (But that's 60's and this is an 80's board thread.)

Aside from the aesthetics, 80's board design fads included the first marketable, mainstream attempts of quad fin setups and channel bottoms, as in the above pic. Both concepts have evolved and are now finely tuned options for a number of board types, including longboards. Who'd have thought that?

    Cycles... go figure.

Checkout the Rainbow handshapes from HotButtered. Siick boards, full of color.

There's some interesting design tech in that pic (ignoring the boards on the car).

The green board is set up as a twin with a small trailer. The pink/blue board is a quad with double concave from the center through the tail. I was watching a review for the Potatonator, and I'm thinking, that's my old quad (minus the glassed-on fins and 80's color).
