That's the thing - I'm not here for validation from people I don't know and most of whom I will never meet. That would be a pretty lonely existence seeking that. I come on SI to talk surf, learn about surf, and laugh my arse off at a variety of hilarious posts by comic genius cats.

This whole paranoia that anyone/everyone has about how good anyone else here is at surfing is out of hand. Explain to me how it affects any one of your lives how good or not good someone you'll never meet is at surfing? Even at your home break, aside from messing up a couple of your rides every so often, how does the talent or kookery of your fellow locals affect your life? It doesn't. You guys are fixated on things outside of your circle of impact on your life.

Would me photodocumenting my life ease your angst? Really, would it? Would it make any of your lives better? No. Then why demand it? I could post all sorts of pics and you'd have no way of knowing if they were real anyway bro. What's the use?

I wouldn't even be on SI this morning if I could effin sleep on this flight. Mad turbulence, ugly flight attendants, bad food. It's ok. We are somewhere over Kansas or Ohio or Michigan and I'll be getting spun OTF in 15s swell by lunch Pacific time. Imbibing a few pints of salt water will be cleansing. Sorry I'm a little late to the game here, but...re: Florida.

A couple things. First of all, people have this tendency to compare FL to places that get a lot of good surf all the time (ie California), even if they do it unknowingly. For whatever reason, FL is held to a different standard than the rest of the East coast in people's minds. Maybe it's because of all the world class pros that have come out of FL, whereas the rest of the East Coast...not so much. So in comparison to Slater, Hobgoods, Lopez's, etc...yea the waves kinda suck, but no worse than anywhere else on the EC (save maybe OBX).

Secondly, summer is the most popular time for visitors to come to FL, the flattest/smallest/most inconsistent season of the year. However, as DP said, it's not REALLY a 3 month flat spell. You can surf nearly everyday if you know where and when to go. So you have people who visited their aunt for a week in July 1982 and then going, "Man I went to FL once...it was FLAT!".

Thirdly, people are just jealous of the warm water and weather, even though I'm in N FL and the water isn't all that warm most of the year, it's sure beats being in NJ or somewhere much colder.

I would add a fourth...They attempt to categorize Florida's 580 mile long Atlantic Ocean coastline instead of treating it in zones. Florida's Atlantic coast is longer than the entire coastlines of VA, MD, DE, NJ. NY and Rhode Island, and half of Massachusetts. It is also roughly equal to the entire GA, SC and NC coastlines. You just cant lump places like Palm Beach, New Smyrna, Jacksonville etc. together...they're very dissimilar geographically and if they were further north they would all be in different states.

 

Well said both of you. So if you are willing to travel to the different zones you tend to find great waves more often than not. Just gotta know what zones goes off on the different swell directions.
