I just logged on to share the same thing. I want to surf in Cuba. Hopefully tickets will be as cheap as PR or close to the price.

I heard the diving is great from people that spent time there in the Navy, but yeah surfing seems limited? Maybe the same as Jamaica?

Seems like you'd need a hurricane to really score, and I'd hate to be hanging out down there with a hurricane bouncing around the Caribbean.

Better call your next surf trip an "educational opportunity"...

"Obama's plans are sweeping: He aims to expand economic ties with Cuba, open an embassy in Havana, send high-ranking U.S. officials to visit and review Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. The U.S. also is easing restrictions on travel to Cuba, including for family visits, official U.S. government business and educational activities. But tourist travel remains banned."

Not yet! Maybe a "Surfrider Foundation advisory trip" can be set up. "Ricky, you got some 'splaining to do!"

Cuba can get some decent surf... Cold fronts will push NW swell from the Gulf on to the NW part of the island. NE swells will sneak through the Bahamas in areas and make its way down to the eastern side of the island with solid surf. The south coast will occasionally get some good waves from the Caribbean.

    Swellinfo has forecasts for Cuba.

Went there in 2002. Right before I really started surfing. Country was amazing but it was a trip how everything was so under the table. For example, we stayed with a family in Havana that we allowed by the goverment to have guests. The family could only keep a small portion..maybe 5-10% of the 20$ a night fee. So they just had us sign in for two days and the other 2 we just payed cash abajo del agua. And then we got an old 50s chevy "taxi" for a three hour ride. Every time we would see any cops we would have to duck so the driver wouldn't get busted. Also, there were three currencies going there...2 different pesos and the american dollar. So the whole thing was a trip. One of the better 2 week trips I've had. There's some amazing music and people there although the food/ lack of could be annoying at times. As far as surf goes, we went to a few beaches but never really saw anything...which means nothing since if you went to Pipe today you didn't see much either. If you've never seen Buena Vista, which is almost 20 years old now (UUTF) check it out its awesome.

You can see some swell on the malecon! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc6HFT_3zqQ

All you do in Guantanamo is dive and fish. The Base is also on the side thats not very exposed, unless a storm is sitting right offshore
