So... Quick question. Kelly was the youngest surfer ever to win the title at the age of 20. Gabs is also 20, however his B-day is in 3 days. Does this technically still count? Like do they both hold the record? Or is Kelly still the youngest ever to win it (based off of years and days)?

 

You introduced race into it. That has absolutely nothing to do with it. I'm married to a PR chick. It has to do with respect for the people you are surfing against. That was the worst case of poor sportsmanship I have ever seen. Yeah, go to the beach and celebrate in the middle of your heat, fkin ahole.

 

Medina is a great surfer. Nobody else stalls into barrels the way he did at Pipe. He earned it. The Tour is designed as a marathon grind, competed in various conditions, over many months of the year. To win it in toto is what it has always been : a kudos to a fine, dedicated, athletic, mentally sharp athlete.

Having said that, Medina is still only 20. He has the duble curse of being a millenial (clueless all too often, entitled, egocentric) as well as Portuguese Brazilian (arrogant, entitled, clueless). The lounging off his board in the water in the final. The me-me-me asspect that he gives off. It's why people don't like him.

And, having said that, it was pretty good stuff to watch Medina in the apres-contest interview with the ASP desk guys. One of the commentators asked Medina about Gabriel's father & what his support meant to Medina.

Medina tried to hold it together as he described that his dad was everything to him, that his dad had gotten him through a very tough year last year, that his dad was the reason why he was champion today....and Medina's smile faltered as he started weeping while saying how much his dad meant to him.

So, that latter asspect of Medina is an insight & says his father raised him right; that he's a 20 year old kid who will gain maturity & 'get it' in due time.

I respect Medina's surfing. I don't particularly care for him as an athlete & sportsman. Maybe in time...

Sure I own it. That would be a comment about race.….....not a racist comment. Please write something literate on this forum that adds to the convo. Yes this vibe absolutely exists if you don't see it you are blind forget professional surfing and consider how many surf resorts in developing countries have natives working for white people vacationing . how many great surf spots have been exploited by foreign white surfers that have resulted in surf ghettos. Do some research into land disputes on a few pacific surf destinations.

Enough with the "ASP made him win" BS... Is he a douche? Yes... That was the most ridiculous celebration I've ever seen.
But he won by winning. Unless the ASP convinced Dusty to get smoked along with everyone else he came up against. Until Julian.
You can't point out one wave that was judged unfairly.

 

Best post on this thread so far...i would only add that this is a big win for South American surfers as well (Brazilians in particular)...he's been carrying that pressure after he started gaining momentum...

 

All North Americans don't root for the US, and all South Americans don't root for Brazil. The Brazilian flag-waving is not unique to surfing, I've seen them bust out flags while standing in front of other nation's government buildings, much to the chagrin of locals...

I find his sportsmanship amateurish, as I find the nationalism of many Brazilians in poor taste. But he won fair & square, thanks to his talent for surfing and for competition.

Unfortunately, this won't change life in Brazil at all, no matter how many heartwarming articles the Inertia pumps out.
