"Sure I own it. That would be a comment about race.….....not a racist comment. Please write something literate on this forum that adds to the convo. Yes this vibe absolutely exists if you don't see it you are blind forget professional surfing and consider how many surf resorts in developing countries have natives working for white people vacationing . how many great surf spots have been exploited by foreign white surfers that have resulted in surf ghettos. Do some research into land disputes on a few pacific surf destinations.

"White supremacy and imperialism don't exist in surfing ......"

Really.. once again? It that all you got in the tank? I suspect you don't even get in the water. You sound more like a troll, very much like a troll actually. And it is starting to get strange. The repeated jabs about my education, that being,..my multiple degrees and being 3 classes shy of the PhD equivalence. << I guess i'll own that, and i'll own my Mil experience, over seas, etc. Nothing special but, Good times all around. Point is I believe I'd own you as well.

YOU are still the only one running snout about some make believe racist surfers. Now you have moved on to Imperialism? For the love of goodness, whats next, Surf Nazis?

You want to talk about a vibe? Nothing but a negative one coming from you for sure. You don't surf. Anyone that obsessed, that much with such topics could never have fun surfing.

BTW smart guy, you really can not prove "vibes" exist, even though many of us believe in them. However, you certainly can not see "vibes" ..... Once again, why so obsessed with the Race Card? How about speaking of the merits or lack their of, of others thoughts about the year as a whole, the contests in general, and the strengths and weakness of the top 20 surfers.

Blind hatred is lame no matter what side of the fence you sit.

Ha ha...angry military guy says "he'd own me" and I obviously don't surf..... Oh boy

Back to the topic....I remember pipe maybe three or four years ago where it was so tiny that guys had to do airs to score. When the finals heat totals are in the 18 and 19 s that's at least decent pipe no?

I agree with the celebration being amateurish. It's a very Brazilian thing. I played in a Samba/Forro band for years and the flag waving, chanting, etc is pretty played.

Great post, yankee. It also doesn't help that Medina has to give interviews in a language he clearly isn't that comfortable with.

I could be wrong, but haven't there been years that the finals had to run down the beach and not at Pipe proper at all?

When the ASP called the event as Pipe was bombing they totally lost me. Bottom line is Kelly and a only a couple of ASP contest surfers could surf it. Sucks for them to call the event when the surf is bombing simply because many of the competitors are piddeling in their boardshorts. The real Pipe Masters were the guys who paddled out after the event was called and charged 2nd and 3rd reef while the ASP contest surfers sat on the beach.

The ASP wanted an outcome and they couldn't put that outcome in jeopardy by running heats in big Pipe.

I read elsewhere that Kelly was very vocal about not running the contest on that day...

Surfing is not soccer, despite what Brazilians are trying to do with the sport
Frankly I don't give a crap he's from Brazil, much like I never cared slater was an American, or Mick is an Australian. The interjection of nationalism into surfing is lame and stupid, it's makes this "sport" seem like a soccer game or Olympic event. Not where surfing should be headed at all.
Congrats to the kid Medina. Who gives a **** about congratulating Brazil or Brazilians, or Aussies, or Americans when a world surfing champ is crowned. I fear for the future of surfing with this trend.
In the meantime, look for Brazilians to be even more rude and brazen in the lineup, as they bask in their nationalistic BS.

I wasn't watching the earlier days. This changes everything, imo. Too bad they canceled when Pipe became Pipe. That's what my earlier "rant" was about. I'm not a conspiracy guy, but this just don't seem right. The guys that COULD handle real Pipe didn't get their day. Well, they probably did, but not in a red vest. Probably went out surfin, while the small wave guys watched from the beach. While Medina was good yesterday, this changes things.

No I would't be out surfin in that insanity. But I'm not the World Champion of surfing.

    2014 gets an *** maybe?

thank you for explaining what i was clearly unable to convey. the asp decided early on in the season who the world champ would be. then they had to make it happen.

More or less agree with this sentiment. I care less about where a guy is from and more about how well he surfs. All that flag waving is pretty ridiculous

This oughta get the crazies outa the shadows, but... I, for one, am proud to be from the USA. Don't see anything wrong with rootin for the US dude.

Just like y'all Jersey dudes root for The Belmar, I root for the US guy, during the very few times I watch contests.

    Go ahead, fire away.

    I asked for it.

    Happy Festivus!

If I'm rooting for Slater I'm not rooting for the USA. Don't get me wrong I love my country but surfing is not a nationalistic "sport" like hockey or soccer. The Brazzo flag waving and over the top national celebration doesn't belong in surfing. You won't find it in any other "alternative" sport
If they want surfing to become soccer or any Olympic type competition then they don't understand surfing. Never been even a team sport, much less a country sport. I'm actually quite glad most Americans wouldn't know who Kelly Slater even is if they bumped into him on the street.

But maybe Americans are just more confident and secure in their love of their country and don't need to get behind a silly pro surfer with extreme nationalistic imagery to justify their support for their country. After all, we aren't chopping off the heads of soccer referees if they blow a call...
Pro surf champ or not, Brazil is still a mess politically, economically, and socially.

Totally "get" that we're an alternative sport. If you wanna go full alternative, then there ain't contests. So we really ain't THAT alternative. Alternative lite. You and I just draw our line in the sand in different places, and that's cool. If we're gonna put on red vests and compete, I like rootin for the local guy.

    Just my $0.02.
