There is no way a human hand puts a finger on one of these boards during construction now. So many new models each year.

$800? That's just insane. I can get a custom board out of a 3DM machine (then hand finished) for $395 plus $30 shipping. I have a small hookup here, but I think the normal price is $450 plus shipping.

If you know what shape you like is it really worth paying almost double for a brand name? If you don't know what shape you like should you really be spending $800 for a new board?

Is machine-shaped less quality than hand-shaped? Each blank is shaped by a robot CAD tool thingy-something, then fine-tuned and sanded by a human being. There is a human involved in part of the process of shaping these boards, no? If that's the case, and these models have been tested by humans, then what's the problem? Yeah, they are pricey (I don't think $800, more like $700) but some of them are sexy looking as all hell.
I'm waiting for Biolos to have the V3 Rockets manufactured by Firewire. Then I'll get one. At least it will last more than a couple of years.

I won a free custom lost surfboard through fantasy surfer league this year and haven't picked it out. I don't care about cost here. These designs are tested and come from one of most respected shapers.

the og rocket is the only thing I can stand by.
and stand by it I will, cause LOST defined the advantages of low entry nose rocker in the early 90s with this board.

There are many local shapers who still cut the blanks and actually hand shape the board. If you want something that lasts, there are plenty of shapers who use epoxy and also know vacuum bagging. If you're happy with a machine shaped and beef fried rice finisher, then spend your money that way. I work too hard for my money for that ****. Now, if it's free from a contest, I couldn't pass it up.

Yeesh. I know. But I am just wondering what size to get. I want to ride nothing waves with it but still have something short.... I want a mini simmons is what I am saying. This board looks like the winner. ... going to go fcs though unless I am talked into the controllers.

    Awesome!

As far the price goes, I don't know that I could ever shell out eight-hundo for a board. A locally produced, beautiful, built to last, hand-me-down type LB... yeah.

Nonetheless, I've met guys that swear by Biolos, and I'd be very happy to be in your situation. Congrats man. Let us know how she rides!

micro brew vs. annheiser busch? mcdonalds vs. the local diner?

There are a lot of (overstated) perspectives on this topic, and I have an opinion so I will voice it.

The pro-machine shaped opinion is that technology is miming the exact 3D shape of a master shaper's fine tuned, tested, final model/template. Its basically technology taking taking shaping to the next level of manufactured consistency.

Another point is volume. A guy without a CAD program of sorts isnt able to calculate volume, and if you want a true super performance board and you arent built like an Abercrombie model and every liter counts... going to a "certified" volume is a GREAT thing.

The pro-hand shaped opinion has many valid points.

One point that I would like to address is local economy. Dudes make their living doing this, the old fashioned way. Thats special. Its really a cool thing. Everybody needs one local board in their quiv.

Andy McDermott has made 3 board for me and Mrs. Two B, and Sashi at 5Star has made one too. They listen, and they give you exactly what you want (for better or for worse) if they cant "suggest" you in the right direction. Andy's boards have gotten me through slumps, and made Mrs. Two B a better surfer. Andy will listen to what I want, tell me when I dont want what what I say I want, tell me what I need, etc. He isnt some broski at the local hucking boards for short money sales spiffs.

I like to think that with local shapers, at least here in the east, they put their own sweat into it because there is accountability---you see them at the local break. You test drive it and look them in the eyes that day, or a week later. Thats an intimate experience.

I am proud to be a hypocrite on this. I surf DHD shortboards, and thats kinda my thing moving forward until the shapes dont do anything for me. Because of the volume, and only because of the volume...
