hey yall, I have been rackin my brain looking at new boards on the web and in the shop, truing to get an idea of a good size durable board that can allow me to move more freely. Currently I reide a 7'10'' nsp, my 1st board ever. I need a board that can deliver quicker turns, like my buddies 6'10'' something erother. I am about 5'10 , 150lbs and surf the jetts @ south padre island. Mostly small surf with some periods of large swell. The funboard is cool and all but in the last year and a half that I have started, i feel a change comin, time for a new board that can move me up and down. Any suggs? johnny
you already answered your own question . you said you like your friends 6'10" , so a board like that is what you should aim for . but when it comes to " durable " , it will be hard to find a surfboard as durable as NSP ( New Surf Project ) . how about their high performance line .... SouthPoint ? they make a 6'10" and 7'2" Bonga Perkins time bomb model . those have a gloss finish and FCS fins , but made durable like the NSP's . i have the 7'2" BP and ride it as a twin using MR.TX sides . lots of drive yet still loose .
I also have a NSP 7'10" and while I don't get to surf a fraction of what I would like to, I feel like I have progressed enough to start looking around at other boards. I was looking at the NSP 6'4" fish, but I am wondering how skilled I need to be to make the adjustment to a smaller and different style board. I like the epoxy board, but I have never ridden a traditional fiberglass board. Maybe I should go that route. Unfortunately, I surf "alone" so I don't have other people around (that I know) in order to try different kinds of boards. How do you know when you are ready to make the leap? I suppose ultimately you just take the plunge, paddle out, and figure it out! After you get the new board, be sure to post a follow-up. Good luck.
look at matt kecheles stub nose fishes or the lost round nose or a retro twinnie they'll paddle like you nsp but ride dif. i'd suggest you ride one of the twinnies in 6'0 and the others in 6'2
Thanks for the feedback Quietflightsurfr. I've checked out the boards you mentioned online. The Lost site suggested going 6-8" shorter than your normal board, but I guess that all depends on what you currently ride. I imagine they are assuming you already ride a short board. At another older thread at Surfline (http://forums.surfline.com/archive/index.php/t-16957.html) it was suggested that your fish it should be shorter than you are tall. And yet another post stated it will ride like it was 10" longer than it is. Does this all sound good to you? Now, if I could just figure out a way to test them out! thanks again, kotsh
