this probably wont be a popular post in a thread of white people, but the problem isnt one of 'good' or 'bad' cops. in fact it has very little to do with individuals at all. the problem is systemic. the function of police is to protect private property within a capitalist society, so when you have a group of people (in the case of america, black people) who have been systematically denied private property from the time that they were unwillingly brought to this country the police naturally have a different type of relationship to such a group. in fact, such acquisition of private property represents a threat to the (mostly white) property owners. the way that the police forces (and the capitalist 'society' of the united states) are composed incentivizes the suppression of black america. it's really a resource or property issue, but because those two things have been so inextricably connected to race for the entirety of american history, it becomes a race issue.

Its funny. The hardcore criminals usually don't hate cops at all. In fact most have a healthy amount of respect for them and the job. In the actual 'hoods the cop-haters tend to be the petty street trash and the wanna-bes. In the suburbs, like where pumpmaster lives, the typical cop-hater tends to be one of two breeds: the perennially-bullied weakling with authority/daddy issues and the narcissist know-it-all who trashes cops online and among people who agree with him (never around actual police, interestingly) because doing so supports his fantasy of himself (and its always a him) as a strong-willed individualist rebel who doesn't take any ****.

The only thing that has ever held it all together is good will between men. Not the police, not the government.
It is the thinnest of threads. Humanity hangs by a thread. It's been that way for many millenia.

Stupidest thing I've ever read on this forum.
So which Cop category do you fall into Officer Dave?
They guy who became a cop to compensate for having a little d!ck or the the guy who became a cop because he got the sh!t kicked out of him every day walking to school by the 'bad kids'?
Please define what you mean by "hardcore criminal"? Do you attend some hard-core criminal convention where they sit around and talk about how they have respect for the cops???
A lot of non-criminal. ordinary citizens are losing respect for cops Officer Dave, not just petty criminals or liberal blacks like the jacka$$ who posted above you.
Even the cop who is posted at my son's elementary school is a douche. Everyone's glad he is there, but he just stands there glaring at everyone, doesn't talk to the kids or parents. He acts like a Nazi storm trooper. So it aint what the TV is telling me Officer Dave, it's what I see with my own eyes and based on REAL LIFE.

Cops would get more respect years ago before the internet and social media took off. Now, the truth can get spread all the way across the world in the press of a button. Nobody was able to speak out to the rest of the world in the past if they were treated wrong or if someone knew of someone who was treated wrong.

Now you can. It's a different world now. No more pushing things under the rug and telling the public how great everybody is at the Police Department. No more fairy tale stories about Officer Friendly. Sure, there are good cops out there, but the way things have been going i'd say they are far and few between, and that's a shame.

actually you support the psychological profile of most cops today perfectly. In my case, my wife was sexually assaulted by a cop and I got to witness first hand how corrupt the police really are. Any more questions?

One the one hand, the optimist in me wants to hope that the good cops outnumber the bad.

On the other, the skeptic in me doubts that is true.

Y'all think that all these body cams the cops are gettin will change the landscape in any way, good OR bad?

Maybe keep folks honest, on both sides?

However, they only work when turned on so they should be mandated with severe (firing) penalties of the are turned off or tampered with.

They sure won't go down without a fight, the bad ones that is. Heck, lots of this is a result of the bogus war on drugs. Cops are sometimes just another gang, except they are allowed to carry guns. Hope the cams end up being a light on the cockroaches. Roaches don't like when you turn the lights on.

Pump might be paranoid, but that doesn't mean the police aren't after him. Like them or hate them, you've gotta admit, they can be corrupt as f*ck. There's a lot of good cops out there but the FACTS point to systemic injustice and corruption.

Cops will back each other up and keep everything secret, from theft, to drug use, and sexual assault, just so that they don't cross the 'blue wall of silence.' The people who have tried to expose this, when and where it's rampant, have had their careers and lives destroyed by fellow officers. From Frank Serpico in the 70's to Adrian Schoolcraft today...

If you don't know about Schoolcraft, I suggest you read about him- he tried to blow the whistle on a lot of police harassment in Brooklyn- all of the illegal targeted arrests, statistic fabrication, and crime underreporting. So the police raided his house, and took him to the hospital, where they checked him into the psych ward as a mental patient, had him handcuffed to a bed, and guarded him there... His own parents were not told where he was and it took them a week to find him. If they did that to a fellow officer, what would they do to a regular citizen?

I suggest you read about his story, for a window into how the NYPD really operates...

The NYPD Tapes: Inside Bed Stuy's 81st Precinct

This American Life (excellent Podcast/Audio show, for those unfamiliar)

For all the people saying 'Blacks should take responsibility,' that's fine, but don't the police need to take responsibility? What the police are doing is ILLEGAL ALSO. IT"S THAT SIMPLE.

No matter how many cops you think are good or bad, the fact remains: A cop can easily get away with illegally harassing you, beating you, and sexually assaulting you. This happens to citizens every day. It might be far from your worlds in Maryland or Monmouth, but this happens to my neighbors. If this happened to your sisters and brothers- how is that okay?

except gang members cant get away with murder by saying things like 'he was resisting' or 'I felt threatened'.
