Wow, that's does look really nice. I have my summer board for next year already shaped in my head. Gonna pull it out my ear may May or June.
Thanks. After riding, rails are too thick, bottom needs more concave, and board needs more rocker. Less width too. Oh well..live and learn. Probably gonna try another one this winter. I have a whole new respect for glassers and sanders though...unsung heroes!
Here's my last chambered board I made for me, And a pic of the semi gun I'm making now. It's got chambered cork rails and is skinned with 1/8th inch ply, no glass. Triple stringers And Clemson, that flipped bird brought back some great SI memories from years past. Gaw soo hostile!
Hello, how do you generate your templates ? What software or are u buying these from grain or something
AKU shaper. http://www.akushaper.com/ It used to be free but they charge a monthly subscription now. Then you need to find a program called hollow wooden board template maker. That might still be free. I've stalled on my last project but I may ring in the new year putting on some rails. Thanks for the encouragement!
Been shaping (and glassing) about 5 years, 4 or 5 boards a year. enough to know how hard it is to shape a good, not just functional board. I will say though, my surfing has improved dramatically once i started making my own boards and learning about design. i think every surfer should shape at least one board.
If you are ever up this way... http://www.shapewithvec.com/ Might be a nice way to get going. been thinking about it myself.
Here's the first 2 boards I shaped for myself a few years ago. I used the AKU shaper program to design the boards and then I sent the files to wrightsville glassing NC. Those guys have blanks and the milling machine, so they just ran the files and shipped milled blanks back to me. When they arrived, I brought them to a local shaper who pointed out some serious flaws in my designs.. basically the foil was all wrong.. too much thickness throughout, especially in the nose and tail (looked totally different on screen=lesson learned).. So he let me use some templates he had to draw new tails and then I just got to mowing the foam until the foil looked and felt correct. I ordered the glassing stuff from Greenlight and also made some bamboo fins. Glassed them myself. left to right: 6'3" round pin single 5'8" round pin 2+1
