yup and don't forget some of the worst water quality in the united states thanks to new york cities giant septic tank and bridgeport's toilet: the long island sound.
only place & time i ever felt like i was going to end up as soup & a rug was when i was forced to spend time in ct...that state also has the dubious distinction of being the location of my only auto accident (the 2 are not unrelated)
Yea man i don't really see the point of connecticut. It would fire tho if long island just went away. I prayed for that many days as a kid. One thing thats cool about connecticut (kinda I guess) is that no one will EVER defend Connecticut's honor of not being a total crap state, and if they try you instantly know their the biggest deuch-canoe in existence. We have no false pride or disillusions about our states lowly place in the universe over here, we know that this place is 100% doom.
Hatteras is probably more consistent due to exposure, but to be honest it really hasnt been very good here for the last year or so. We've had moments, but the sandbars are pretty funky after last winter. It never really came back to form like it should. From all the videos of Jersey Ive seen, I'd say that over the last year the Jerz takes it.
I noticed the same size wave in central Florida had way less power than Nags Head. It did; however, seem to break on much less of a swell. Friends that have lived in central Florida say they prefer OBX overall. This fall/winter has been good, but it would be nice to be in Florida in the winter and skip the heavy winter suits.
nj surfing is a double edged sword- the window is often small but when it works here, it really gets good. There are often many different breaks/different waves in close proximity. We catch south windswell really nicely, and east/NE also. Lots of different breaks different sandbar/rock/piling setups all over. Sure, if you have work or school that you can't blow off, you might not surf for a month straight. But if you are retarded/stupid/selfish enough to base your life and work schedule around the surf report then you can get it, and often uncrowded. Still gotta pay bills somehow bc it aint cheap here, but CT is more expensive and straight up hell. You can also get skunked for weeks on end in NJ like CT, Iowa or every state on the east coast the grass is always greener. I would love to have OBX water temps up here and be able to surf a hooded 4/3 all winter long
Whether you have an accident or not, the Connecticut turnpike is just the most horrible stretch of road anywhere. The Connecticut Turnpike makes the roads of El Salvador and Indonesia look like marvels of modern engineering. I remember about 20 years ago a former governor of CT (Lowell Wieker or something maybe) put up a huge billboard on the side of the road taking credit for getting rid of the tolls, meanwhile the road is just a horrendous pile of crap. RI has waves, New Jersey has waves but god forbid you ever decide to traverse CT to get from one to the other.
I've always sort of thought that while Hatteras gets plenty of swell, it really is nice to have inlets, jetties, and groins to form up something resembling a pinned down right or left hand break, and to provide some wind protection. If the stretch of beach from Rodanthe through Buxton had jetties, it would probably have some pretty amazing jetty lefts all fall and winter during the north swells/northwest wind combo setups that are so frequent.
I mean the lighthouse is pretty much always set up for a north, but there has been very little variety here for a while now. Im not complaining, but we usually have a handful of distinct bars and its just been kinda ehhh with the options lately.
Its all Beach Break from Jersey down to Key Largo. The Point Breaks, Slabs and Reef Breaks begin North of that. Just Sayin...
there is much truth to these words. Fort fisher in north carolina has a reef break near it, but its the only southern one I am aware of. Sick footy!
im talking about seans reef, it can be seen from the gazebo overlooking the cove, its only worth it at high to mid tide or your gonna snap a fin or two
1: Belmar, NJ 2: everywhere else Haha- you guys know I had to post that... As far as consistency - not the breaks themselves- I would say that it's jersey and NC - after doing much traveling for work (and surfing) on the east coast- I have found that I would be traveling somewheres and I would check jersey... Of coarse there's waves Anyways I guess what I'm trying to say is that even though we have some long flat spells- we still have it pretty good, specially considering other factors... Like the juice- I'm sure I would miss the juice if I was anywhere else. As far as which has better breaks- well you know jersey is basically all sand... Except the artificial reef in Belmar... And everywhere south is sand. I have found the all New England areas have by far better breaks- the kind you dream of while surfing dirty jersey
