First, stop smoking, cigarettes or otherwise. Stop drinking alcohol--all of it.
Second, get into 25 meter pool. Swim underwater as far as you go. Increase distance of underwater swim over time (weeks, months, etc.). Be patient-- small increases are significant. Keep a record/log. You will be surprised.
No matter what any book will tell you, nothing will beat that.

Well, i know there's other techniques than that that are taught i courses so I'm looking for stuff like that too. Did you check the vid? I want to know some of the stuff they're doing in those breathholding exercises as well

Don't know of any big wave dudes that don't drink and 1/2 of them smoke... Drink and smoke (cigarettes or otherwise) if you don't already

patgeds22 is hilarious with his treads that he bumps and begs for responses from yet chastises half of the responders. At least he will get his long awaited equations and formulas from the "experts". Who are these experts we have peddling their omniscience around SI? A redeeming factor is that the topics of patgeds22 treads are usually scientifically technical and pertinent to surfing. But lol at his passive-aggression to responders he pleads for.

btw, props to FUN for his gentlemanly scholarship with the advanced degrees in stokeology!

I think the biggest technique is not being scared and staying calm why being thrashed and rag dolled
