do you plan on biking to work every day? never using plastic again? ending all heavy construction? .... it's easy to point fingers until you really understand how much oil is used in everyday life... don't get me wrong i'm not cheering for an oil spill, i'm just sayin we have no better way to do these other things.... and don't even say renewables.... i'd love to see a wind powered crane, or a wave powered truck
the trick is the focus oil use where it is true needed and away from things like power generation. The problem is there is really nothing (aside from nuclear) that can fill the gap right now.
I heard that NPR piece too. They made it seem like the environmentalist groups were benefiting because drilling in Alaska would be limited and the bill would only begin discussions about drilling in the Atlantic with no guarantee that they'd find any or even be allowed to look. I'm all about alternative sources of energy but nothing at this point is going to replace oil. This is a play to further hurt the Russian economy by making cheap oil available (or look like we are) while bolstering up the middle east. As long as we're the best oil customer they won't sell to other countries whose economies are reaching our level.
Maybe the oil companies that make 20 billion dollar profits per quarter can invest in some r&d on indefinite solar energy and batteries that aren't so gnarly? How does battery pollution compare to oil pollution? Solar energy is definitely powerful, and when I think about amplifying solar energy, I'm thinking magnifying glass style amplification. When you're making 20 billion quarterly, I don't think there is much motivation to try something different, regardless of the planets ailing health.
Yea I'm pissed......Big Oil has Tillis and McCrory hanging on their pockets. They aren't even looking to solar and wind opportunities.
What about developing anti gravity propulsion systems? Like when magnets don't stick together and push apart. If 4-5 big oil companies sacrificed 25% of their yearly profit, that would be 100 billion towards alternative energy r&d. They undoubtedly, would all remain rich as f*ck. So what's the problem? They certainly don't need that extra money to survive, but the planet certainly needs that r&d to survive. They are afraid to close, or even slow the money faucet that is oil. Money is power, they have most of it, so they win, and the whole planet loses. "Cut your nose to spite your face".
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/biofuels/oil-companies-promoting-alternative-energy.htmthey are investing, just not at the rates you suggest. The only problem i see is the greed is universal and what is to stop researchers from stretching out their work to keep the money flowing to them??
oh Doug, maglev isnt technically anti-gravity (although that would be awesome) but it is highly efficient for things like trains.
Wind and solar are good supplements on a small scale. Like individual houses. You can't run a grid off them and expect to have life as we know it. Nuclear is the best option right now. Its just the scariest one in most people's mind. There is not just one change that needs to be made and the ripple effect touches everything. I saw something about a 3d printed electric car. It was significantly lighter and extremely customizable. It would also be crushed if it got in a wreck with any common car. If everyone was driving these cars the crash problem would essentially cure itself. Paradigm shift time.
I was impressed with the number of folks on Oahu who have adopted the solar panel system on their homes. My bro did it and he said it hurt on the up front cost but always has plenty to power his home on a monthly basis. Paradigm shift indeed. I also know a guy in Texas who has his own wind energy that powers his ranch house...barns etc. He sells power back during certain parts of the year. Cost him over $20k to get started. We are not getting away from fossil fuels anytime soon. Especially at $40-50 for crude. When we had $4/gallon gas, consumption actually went down. OPEC is actually spurring demand. Then there is China (and others) that are following their own enviro standards. I am for America's self reliance too....quite the mind _ _ _ _!
Energy independence is the way to go for us, but the countries we've propped up with our oil dollars would take a major hit. Without other economies and sources of income they'd be milking camels and getting into their second major export, terrorism. I know that's a pretty big generalization but probably not far off. I've wondered if the US is "protecting" all of it's oil supplies and waiting for the OPEC nations to sell all their oil before tapping our own supply. It would be a good way to watch the world burn if you're into that thing. The unknown utopian view seems much nicer if we could just figure it out.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Ignition_Facility Fusion the way. Whoever gets it right will make oil company profits look puny
I work in both the energy efficiency solar industries. I don't sell them or install them but i do work that regulates these industries and just want to put this out there. It is very easy and somewhat inexpensive to take an existing home and reduce its energy use by 20%. The are loan/incentive programs everywhere to help pay for it, and the monthly loan payment will be less than what you are saving in energy. Couple this with a net metered PV system that is still hooked to the grid. These systems are not as expensive as you think, there is all types of ways to pay for it and you will create 110% of your electricity usage. What you don't use, your electric supplier will pay for. Again the monthly payment for this system will be less than your electric bill was. You no longer get a bill from the electric company but a credit. There have been tens of thousands of energy retro fits on long island and the 10,000th solar install is about to happen. This is a doable solution for the individual home owner when it come to energy consumption. This decreases demand. dDecreasing demand is the best way you as an individual can put a damper on new oil facilities. Look into it.
Utopia sounds nice...I'm afraid that is getting further away from us though (really why we should all cherish each wave we catch huh?). I have thought the same thing about our reserves/while milking theirs in the past. But, we are exporting too so go figure. Also on your generalization, most of the terror funding (not all), come from oil.
