I have heard lake michigan gets some waves. I've seen some pictures...seems to be always in the winter with a strong cold front
led i can see you or me doing that. except i almost did when i was visiting my grandma in new york right beside the great lakes. but i realized i forgot my wetsuit.
Sooooo. . . a surf report for the Great Lakes would necessarily include a full schedule of major shipping freight carriers as the most reliable predictor of incoming swells, right? That, and you'd have to include tonnage for each of the carriers because that would make a difference. You know, water displacement and all.
No. great Lake surfers dont rely on ships, they rely on fetch just like us, just not on such a large scale.... i think
Take a look at the movie Unsalted. Pretty interesting and they DO get waves on limited occasions, just not a place to plan a surf trip tho.
Here is a video of the lakes with at least double overhead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdbxLk8_C8c
Ive sponged there a couple of times and i had no idea when there would be and good swell cumming in. They do have good breaks though like a lot of point breaks and unsalted is awesome.
