I need some advice regarding dk riding. I know all about board requirments but what I really need is some basic tips on getting into the stance and holding a line. Also, I currently wear da fins. Are these acceptable for drop knee?

Haha yeah, I figured he'd eventually show up so I decided against sending a pm. Plus, I wanted to get to know some of the other swellinfo spongers.

Getting into the stance is the easy part. You just pull yourself up onto both knees, then whip one foot forward. Practice it about 10,000 times and you'll get the hang of it. I haven't yet mastered holding a line, but having a decent wave w/some speed helps. Can't really seem to do it in crap mush.

Watch this guy, he does it well:

Learn in some mushy ones first...hold the rails push the board down as you pop up...plant your knee first then swoop the front foot right up...learning by planting both knees first just leads to further hesitation in my experience...your dropped knee will hold the line and your front foot will do the trimming...

Scarecrow when are you taking me on a date:cool:

Da Fins are big and have those keel-like things on the top, probably not the best choice.

    yes.
drop knee is really cool (really).
just put one knee up. easy.
on a surfboard thats a SURFBOARD drop knee is marvelous cause it allows
for stalling and a 3 point stance which can be utilized to successfully ride the tube.
johnny-boy was the first to tell successfully pipe.....OH NO YOU DON'T!
    he was indeed a bad-ass.
    think he's locked up.
    hawaii doesn't want federal prisons;
    ships them to texas.
    cause things are bigger there.

    you're welcome.
    one more thing...
    the better a surfer gets...
    IMO...
the less they condescend to drop-knee-ers....

There isn't much to drop knee other then to just practice and get better at it.. Not exactly my cup of tea but it's a good neutral zone between prone and stand up. I often find myself grabbing the rail facing the beach with my hand, it makes controlling the board a lot easier, and you aren't really gonna do anything with that hand anyway.

The almighty knee. I honestly struggle with dk, had more success on a shortboard in my teens, but have committed myself to throwing huge hacks by Fall. Lots of good tips thus far, what I can add:

-angled take off is key. However you pop up, you gotta set your rail simultaneously. Since you have less volume, getting up is less forgiving and timing is critical. Have some planing speed, take off/set rail, pop up immediately after.

-can definitely grab your outside rail to stay engaged and get used to the feel.

-I use tech 2's. My winter fins are churchies, and it's tricier getting that front foot around. I plan to clip the front fin.

-especially for a bigger guy, don't even try till it's 3 ft with at least little power.

    -let eat fish taco.

Imho, this is the essence of dk. If a similar turn on a surfboard is a Goshin Ryu style roundhouse kick, this is a Muay Thai low leg kick:
