So this morning I had a buddy bet me $40 that I couldn't walk across my pond without falling in. So i put my wetsuite booties on and started walking. Lemme tell you what. When I fell through about waist deep. it really wasn't all that cold. I was expecting it to be painfully cold and it really wasn't. IT was just a little colder than the air. I took a shower afterwards and it was damn painful. So. Lesson of the day. Don't walk across ice. It breaks and will make you pay $40.
When I was a stupid teenager I did the same thing. But not for money. Was right after a winter session (obviously) and the bay was frozen. I wanted to walk out and try and grab some grass from the other side. Don't know why, but grabbing some grass seemed like a great idea. So stupid me had my suit pulled down to my waist with hoodie on my torso. Feel through, suit filled with water, I froze, it sucked. But I did retrieve some grass.
I used to ice skate on the River Charles (Boston) when I was young and foolish. It was a cove that froze up with pretty thick ice. But the ice was always making scary cracking noises, from expansion/contraction I guess, that used to scare the bejeezus out of me. Then there was an incident when a woman fell through the ice trying to save her dog, and she was dead before anyone could get to her--this was in a pond in the woods. Anyway, it frightened me out of skating on the river.
