Soo trying to get down to central FLA for some 3/4 suit water here soon. Looks like it's been real good. Was thinking about hitting Flagler and points south up... Anyone care to pM me about such info??...(spots to avoid, maybe places to camp etc.) would be greatly appreciated
That place must be sharky as f*ck. Anyone ever see the episode of "Monster Fish" with Jeremy Wade, catching bull sharks in a Florida inlet? I forget witch inlet, but there were people swimming and partying right there in the same spot.
I haven't surfed fl in the winter in a while but I'm pretty sure you wont need a 4/3 especially if your going a little south. Can anyone back me up on this? I lived in jax beach area in the early 90s and I just remember wearing a 3/2 with booties at its coldest.
It was probably New Smyrna / Ponce Inlet but it could of been Sebastian Inlet too. Both very sharky, but typically not an issue. Minor nibbles most times, no fatal bites. I wear my 3/2 year round, if you're in Jax you may want a 4/3 for the coldest of days but you can get away with a 3/2 if you got boots, hood, gloves to throw on when necessary. There are undergarment wetsuit accessories you can throw on as well to make your 3/2 a 4/3, which I have and have only used on a handful of occasions.
Dudes, I just came across this drone footage from Thurs. at Satellite Beach...
Metard and DPSup, thanks for the quality posts. I feel like Florida has had a great winter. The Northeast has seen a couple of great weeks, but It seems that you guys have been getting swell much more consistently. Just seeing these days, I understand why you guys always defend FL's quality of surf.
Love the drone vid. I spent most of the day in Satellite and it was super fun if you found a good shoulder. I got closed out on a lot of em. Got worked over pretty good a couple times. Those puppies had a lot of juice and you payed a hefty price if you made a bad choice. Thanks for posting that vid DP.
This has been the best winter on the Gulf in years. I've been out of the water since November. Figures. View attachment 14601
A lot of people in Jax wear 4/3s this time of year but you don't NEED one. Especially if you're coming from NC. 3/2 and booties and you're good. Further south, no way will you need a 4/3 and south of the Cape you might be too warm.
FL gets just as good or better than anywhere on the East Coast. The difference is most people come to FL in the summer when its flat (and so is the entire east coast) and Florida has a history of world class (and not so world class) pros who travel to world class breaks. So you hear them compare (or really contrast) FL to places like Pipe. I would also say FL is the only east coast state to have anything resembling a widespread "surf culture" and maybe the quality and quantity of waves don't quite live up to that culture, if that makes sense. So yea, count me in as a defender of FL. edited to add: and when I refer to FL in this post I'm basically talking about Palm Beach County and all points North.
Yeah man, it's been one of the best Winters in a long time, at least in my limited memory banks. As a matter of fact, it's really been a good YEAR. I remember sitting in the line up in the middle of June with Chest+ waves when it was supposed to be flat saying, can you believe it's June and it's working this good? Definitely been a fun ride. Yeah, I love the drone vids too. I just hope people don't use drones for bad things, but stuff like this is really cool. Gives you a completely different perspective on the waves and the picture quality is crystal clear HD type quality, I love it! Glad you were able to get on those bombs, memorable looking day for sure. It's been a good run hasn't it!? Thing is, the E. Coast has been so consistent that I haven't spent too much time in the Gulf this winter, but I have had a few good Gulf sessions. Right on dude. Don't tell MIS though, he'll tell you it only gets good here like once every 5-10 years. HAHA That's fine though, keeps the crowds down (kinda) Baddy, come visit us next Fall / Winter for like a week during a legit swell, I'll be your guide, we can get pizza or tacos afterwards and lie about the great waves we caught
I thought florida was always warm u need boots and gloves sometimes?i consider florida the east coast California.plenty of epic waves and more then plenty of good surfers.i have family in cocoa beach,i have no clue what part of florida that is all I know is its where slater is from.they don't surf btw, just family that got tired of the cold weather here in the northeast and moved down there many years ago.
