Its not just the size of this wave. It's jacking up and detonating right onto the beach. The
"appropriate size boards" for getting into this wave still won't get you the amount and quality of ride those guys were getting. You need something smaller to make those adjustments for speed and little tweaks here and there. The appropriate size board for dropping into that wave that deep might get you a ride but it will be a white knuckled uncontollable speed run nowhere near that barrell. Or you would be just get annilated. towing in allowed for the rider to ride a pee wee board which increased his control over the equipment. I think its cool. I'd try it.

CDsurf said it right. being in those conditions in cold water and not being able to get a good one is frustrating.
If it was anytime other than dead of winter I'd have no problem paddling into those waves and not making it. but a couple of wave detonations on the head from waves like that today would be too brutal. like hood gets pulled off lose a glove yardsale style kind of brutal.

 

Nobody is talking a longboard; a small upward adjustment in board size is all you need. We surf waves like those here as well, when breaking. No difference here than there. I am older now as well, so my perspective changes/adjusts. The best rides in one of those videos was the individual riding a CI Black Beauty--he got in early with the small glide the extra flotation gave him, and was just as deep as the others. That is my point. And BTW, I do understand that ONCE IN THE WAVE, it is nice on a smaller board (I rode them myself until recently), but the expressed concern was CATCHING the wave.
Having said that, I see nothing wrong with jet skis, if that is what you need to do.

 

The obvious problem with the ski is the devaluation of exactly how the spot breaks. Trust me you don't have waves that break like this one. This spot has been an east coast "novelty" for decades.

It is entirely possible that the break is unique to your location. That point is reasonable to concede--you know the break, I do not.
I do not understand what it is you mean by "devaluation" used in this context.

 

Personally I agree with this, but if others know a break better than I, I will consent to their "local knowledge".

Watched this session from the beach for awhile. Saw Colin paddle into-and make- a couple of waves of the same size as shown in the video. He's the real deal. Doesn't need a ski.
Disclaimer: I'm not a friend-but have seen him surf all types/sizes of waves on all different types of boards. That wave is a neck/back breaker-literally. Surfers have been carted off from there on back boards. You really have to want it to go out in those conditions.

I want to say that if they had only showed a single clip of someone stepping off the ski, you really would have had no reason to ***** and Hate about it.

That wave is legit. If you have never seen it or been out there in any size, you really would not appreciate what it does. If you had been there, you would have been either in the water or staying the hell out of the water. Either way you would end up having a blast just being some part of what was going down. That is how the vibe goes up/out there. Very Special place when its on and working, Just saying. And this from someone who wishes I have spent more hours up there over the years then what I have.

I've been hating on myself for not making more of an effort to drive up on that day. I keep looking at the media from it and the size and conditions look so sweet. Once again, the period was up around 13 sec so as you can see those waves were moving fast.

If you ever tried it, you would have more respect for it. Sand bottom slab with BACKS that can get so THICK. It will rock your world regardless of how good you are.

Double Kudos to the lower slower crew.

 

Half the local surfers at this spot are longboarders (maybe not on this particular day)
Nobody should be saying anything about board size and this spot unless you surf there because they don't show the full wave or paddling into the waves in the video.

I've seen 95% longboarders at this spot before. Respect everyone in the water, and they'll respect you.

Colin and Raven are beasts, and so is anyone who charges waves of this size. You can't deny it.

Now, as for skis...
They got tons of barrels, and they made money. How can you hate on that?
