Had an incident yesterday in southern New England with a few bearded locals with bad attitudes. I think they're starting to get upset that they're outnumbered at their "home" break by a new young surf crowd. With a bunch of "strange faces" as they liked to say, they kept chirping the lineup. Well after watching them snake people left and right and take every wave they could, I decided it was my turn to get one. First wave of the session, I get myself into priority position deep at the peak, take off, yell to the guy in front of me dropping in with no regard for other surfers. I was up behind him and caught behind the section because i couldn't turn in front of him. Stuck inside and nearly washed to the rocky shoreline, I'd had enough watching these guys cursing out every surfer they didn't recognize and snaking everybody without a second thought. I paddled back to the lineup to where my friends were sitting and started letting them know how I felt. We each caught our next waves and hopped off the back next to each other down the point. Before I could think to paddle back to the break, there was the group of old locals yelling at us. The guy who snaked me started telling me to keep my mouth shut about him and then his friend told "me and my buddy" to go, "surf the f*cking beaches". We held back nothing telling him he's dropping in and thinking he is self entitled to the waves. He immediately paddles over to me and starts grabbing at my board and legs spinning me to face him. He starts to back off a bit after mouthing off and I started to paddle away from him. Then as his buddies are yelling he told me, "Get the f*ck outta here!" So I responded back telling him the same. He snapped, screaming asking who I thought I was talking to and then paddled over to me as fast as he could asking, "where do you want to bleed from?" As he approached me he grabbed at my legs and trying to instigate a fight. I told him I wasn't trying to fight him out in the water and he ended it by asking for an apology... I don't understand who these guys think they are. In no way are they the best surfers in the lineup, nor am I going to say I am either. But everybody knows surf etiquette and these guys just don't give a f*ck. A few California natives were in the lineup and pretty upset about the vibes these guys were giving off too. I think it's about time these guys hang up their boards on the wall before they start ruining a great surf spot for the majority of surfers. I guess they're a little upset their old "home" break just might not be theirs anymore...
Sorry for your unfortunate incident, East. New England localism is kind of funny because nobody from New England can surf. Where's their Sam Hammer's and Ben Gravy's? Hey, there's two options to this sh!t: The thug way - Get out of the water and lay wait and attack. Or the responsible citizen way - calling the po-po. technically you've been assaulted. Since New England is the land of refinement and sophistication these guys probably have something to lose - jobs, family and such. They'd probably cry in court. Wow, such wild antics from New Englanders. Hey, name the spot and draw a map, that will teach those guys. Remember guys, most surfers are all talk. The scary people are in Bridgeport not Narragansett.
I would video these douchecanoes with a go pro or three, and out them on Youtube. Maybe the shame will regulate them.
Not normally one to disrespect the spots and give away names but these guys deserve to be called out... Well known point, Ruggles in Newport RI.
first the beaner story and now this..... i would walk into their fvcking living room and call their abuelita a biznatch
Ohhh, well, that should probably be expected. No one even heard of Ruggles outside of Providence before 1998. Yeah, I guess some dudes are upset aboot all of that new found exposure. Tell 'em your that Sid Abruzzi's nephew.
If he put his hands on you then you should have knocked him out. Bullies only attack those who won't fight back. Teach the ****er a lesson and he or anyone who saw it wont Fvck with you anymore
Oh well, maybe that point is all they have in the world. Shake it off. Hire a Puerto Rican street guy to accompany you to Ruggles next time. Seldom Seen can be hired for protection, though he's pretty white. I don't know. Try Monahan's next time? They're friendly there I hear. Rhode Island angst !!! Got to love it.
Just saying, why would I make this up. Do I deny mouthing to the guy too, no. He deserved it. But I didn't say anything to him until he approached me.
If this actually happened as you described it, you should do everybody a favor and call the cops on these guys. It's totally pathetic that grown men participating in a hobby (yes, that's what it is) have this attitude. Seriously, if you find yourself doing this sort of thing while surfing, you need to take a step back and examine your life.
