I'm not surprised; that spot's got a history of localism. I know people who are good surfers, have lived in NPT their entire lives, and they won't go there without a regular. Not worth the hassle I think, and always a good idea to ask about a spot first.
I'm going to challenge the veracity of this post due to the author's insinuation that anybody in Rhode Island can actually surf.
Ben Gravy, lol. The Kelly brothers, Gessler, Dean and Hammer can all surf really well, Ben Gravy on the other hand is a hack and has horrible style. He should stick to his jackass type movies and refrain from filming himself.
oh wheres your 10 edits a month?id love to see them.get rescued by any helicopters lately?when u have 1 dude that surfs with every pro on the eastcoast, takes out of state road trips with them,i wouldn't say he has horrible style.dude is fat and still rips harder than you. and to the original op,i wouldn't take shyt from people who live in mansions,as everyone near ruggles lives in(if they really are locals.)best to keep cool,no need to get jumped in freezing temps by a bunch of hooded bearded men lol
So many spots from westport to westerly. You can find a reef with 1 or 2 guys this time of year. There's other waves in that exact area with less folks.
Wow what I relief to know its not just me! I thought I was going crazy. Paddle out- wait arnt these the same exact guys I surfed with last time? Different spot tho and different cars... But they have that same high pitched voice... When they talk. Kinda whinny too Maybe they are hipsters... Idk I always thought they where friendlier.. If I know they are hipsters, I could deal with them. I would just them thAt surfing isn't cool anymore- everyone is now quiting and getting into postage stamp collecting and checkers.
Insightful, common sense comment. I'd rather surf 5' Cottons with a dozen guys out than 6' Trestles with 50 guys out.
A mix of sheit..surf jocks and hipsterz.. The hipsterz done studied everything aboutz surfing on da interwebz..the jockz are plagued with **** measuring butt slapping syndrome.. The amount of waves I've given up to these corn flakes or watch them blow it..Ah man I tell ya Mr Doeski ain't go no moe time fo dat..maybe we need to go kamikaze..remember Jesus those peakz are yours..
Dear mr doeski I Just gave a hand full of those waves up the past swell... They blew a few fine waves, some didn't even catch it- others cursing as they fell...The one I took, one of the guys on the inside yelled 'watch the guy on the peak' ... Like I was dropping in on him- but he never went cause I was watching. So I told him- he never went so I went. What ever, maybe I should just invest in ear plugs Think I'm just going to start aiming for those guys as I take off... Maybe a little scare tactic would work! Btw welcome back to the Belmar Your pal Mr Belmar
According to the OP, it wasn't just yelling. The guy paddled over to him and assaulted him in the water. Obviously who knows whether this really happened, but if it did, I would definitely like to get this @sshole out of the water. It's just surfing- if you're seriously looking to drown other people you have no business being in the water.
In fairness, my guess reading between the lines is that the OP showed up with 5 of his buds at a very localized spot, so the reaction is not totally surprising. At the same time, the response seems like it was totally over the top. I can kind of understand repeatedly burning new guys who do this until they earn their place. Threatening and assaulting people is just over the line though. You can drown somebody in about 30 seconds and then your local tough guy act turns into a murder charge. So f-n dumb.
Just step up your paddle game and shine the bastards with no snake blood in the water. Ignore and get every wave you can. That usually humbles a$$holes like that!!
Yes Ruggles can get a little snippy, but really there is only a couple of places breaking there on a smallish day like yesterday. Head high+ at best. No, I was not there, but "The Point" and "The Channel" were probably the only places breaking. This means really only two take-off spots and at best three wave sets. So I can see if there was more than Six people out it was "crowded". Respect is earned at Ruggles and you need to show your face at some of the 12-15 foot face days. Take your beatings "Around The Corner" when it is 15-20 feet and you will be one of the guys. Just showing up when it is small and complaining about the locals will not "Make You A Man." I know this is "Old School" thinking, but Ruggles is one of those surf spots that is a gift from the Gods on the east coast and will always be special to locals. If you guys want privacy and some Point/Slab breaks head over to Tuckermans and you can have it all to yourself.
Ah you know when I was surfing domes Thursday with the local boyz..some chick dropped in on me and then yelled watch out with your boogie board..her boy toys then thought it was good a idea to pads to the main peak and give me the beam...needless to say those local boys ran those peoplez off the spot.. Anyways go kamikaze..drop in on everything when that **** happens!
To me that is a popular break so there really shouldn't be localism. However I don't think it's wrong in all cases. For instance. Let's say this was a somewhat unpopular point. These guys have been freezing their balls off day in day out all winter. Bad surf good surf. One day surf is right at that point. Here you come, feeling like the ocean is for everyone. However, in their mind, if the surf isn't good at your spot, you shouldn't intrude on their spot. Because when the surf was good at your spot, they surfed **** in their spot. Also no offense but you made yourself look bad. If you're not going to throw down, you probably shouldn't hurl insults at people. Everyones tough till till the guy isn't scared by your threats
was she kinda short and thick / plump? Paddles for every wave and misses most but gets one here and there and then paddles right back to the front of the line and outside everybody on the peak?
My guess is, there is more to the story. There's always two sides. I'm sure there are people who would accuse me of being an angry local but I can assure you that I've never hassled anyone ever without good cause.
