Frisco, worth a three hour drive?

Nah man VB is better by far. Waves suck hard on the OBX. Sharks are a huge problem. We chum the waters every two hours and have Megaladons patrol the line up on the reg. When Meg is not around the Whites, Tigers and Bulls come back and eat whatever is left. Best to stay in VB. Plus Chica could show you some sweet pics of multiple suns and you guys can hunt contrails.

 

Frisco is good. Sharks are not too bad. Check the swell and if it's good then hit it.

 

Frisco only works on south swells or really big n swells that wrap around the point. The best winds for frisco are n-nnw. Ive surfed there many times and have rarely caught it really Good. However, it is a very tide dependant, sand bar dependant break. When it's big it usually breaks close to 150-200+ yds ou with no channels so be ready to paddle your ass off. Drift can be bad too. Water is usually warmer du le to water getting pushed in by the Gulf Stream but with te offshores it can be just as cold as the east facing beaches. Knock on wood but haven't seen any sharks out there yet but always keep your eyes peeled. Here's a pic from when it gets really good and makes it all worth it.

 

its a hit our mis with this was a inside at fricos a a few winter agos. theres deep water right off the beach and i have seen quit a few sharks south of avon but it is what it is.

 

Yes it gets good probly once in 2 months, bull shark munched on some seagulls 10 feet away from me once it's sharky down there but most aren't the scary kind

 

Its the sharkiest feeling place I've ever surfed. Love it though. Some days you really feel like you are part of the food chain down there. I've caught it good to epic a couple times recently.

 

It is very sharky feeling. Its usually really soft as in you better ride a log kinda wave, or a 100mph left closeout from a north wrap. There is always a giant annoying trough on the inside. Works best on the hard sw windswell overnight turning straight N hard the next day which almost never happens. The wind always comes around N-NE-ENE in a matter of minutes. Swell window is anywhere from 1 minute to 2-3 hours. You will miss it 99.9% of the time. Its almost so fickle its not even worth having it there, but like any spot it will have its day. I've had some of my funnest sessions down there when the stars align. Its usually a waste of gas though, even from Buxton.

I was down there for the entire Black Friday Swell back in 2012. That week it ranged from head high drainers to beyond double overhead. One day the only takers were Brett Barley and Fisher Heverly towing in. That was an amazing session to watch. Witnessed Fisher Heverly get the best tube ride I've ever seen. If you've seen the footage of Matt Kekele towing into Pump House during Hurricane Sandy, it was on par with that but longer.

Florida wins the sharkiest place on the right coast by far. As for Frisco: Bethany would go.

to the OP, I would go. I've made impromptu trips up there from way down south here and it's usually worth the scenery from the ferry if nothing else. It's more like a 5 hr trip for me so 3 hrs sounds like a worth while day trip. Go! camp out in Buxton at Buxton Woods. nice people. hope you score!

Its usually worth the drive, if you dont find a wave at frisco you can always travel a little farther down the islands and find something worth the paddle. But i have never had a problem with sharks. I usually see a few dolphins and then wont see a shark.

 

frisco is only good when you have already surfed all you can surf on the buxton side and you drive around the bend just for giggles. If you were to make the trek in north winds expecting to score you will get skunked 99.9% of the time. Take it from me I have made many a day trip for waves and had to settle for bbq. The only times I have seen it fire is in light and variable winds.
