Being clueless and inconsiderate or being a danger to others are the most common. Paddling out into a mellow scene and being that guy that ruins the vibe for everyone. Don't be that guy.

The one thing I don't get with the modern day pussified surfer is the sense of entitlement. Respect is earned. When I travel I don't paddle into a crowd of locals and expect them to give me waves just because I'm there and I sure as heck don't paddle battle locals or cause a bad vibe even though I could paddle battle with the best of them if I wanted to.

yea, round here in rhody things can get backwards sometimes, lots of dudes just trying to protect their sacred waves and end up not enjoying them as much and ruining it for everyone

As someone who lives within walking or a short bike ride from some of the most ridiculously crowded spots around I'd tend to side with the locals. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and wonder what the Rest Of The Story is.

That is the right thing to do, earn respect in the water. However, many travelers to other locations unfortunately don't feel that way. It is often thought, "hey, Im here for 2 days; Im gonna catch as many waves as I can and I don't give a fook about others". Small wonder on the fight back...
On a similar train of thought, the aggro in the water is fostered by most of the surfing journals. Not purposely, I hope, but by language used. Many years ago, surfing was calmer, aggro, rare. Surfers would "glide", "ride", etc, the waves. Now the language has migrated to rip, slash, burn, destroy, mutilate, carve, the waves....the language of violence. Again, small wonder on the fight in the water. In so doing, surfers themselves have created the very negativity. just opinion.

    ^^^^^ This.

When I was a grom their were people you just didn't f*ck with or surf by untill they thought you were worthy. Period. That being said they were not usually the best surfers just the biggest badazzes. Generally if you were a good surfer and not a d-canoe hassles were few and these dudes actually had your back. I saw a lot more beat downs in the 80's than I've seen in the last 20 years. As for travel I've never had a problem because I give respect to the locals. If there is a pecking order, and there is, you best figure a way to get in their good graces. All being said sometimes people are just a**holes and it's best to avoid them if you ain't gonna smack 'em down. Sorry they harshed your mellow.

I've observed a lot over the past 32 years surfing crowded lineups. I've never seen an outsider hassled without cause even if the outsider was completely clueless as to why they were being hassled. I've also never seen anything go physical without something blatant or dangerous happening or a good bit of mouthing off. Know when to paddle away. The instances of fisticuffs I've seen have mostly been with regular visitors who've had frequent infractions or a one time encounter with a nut. No telling if the nut was a local or not but guaranteed the locals got blamed for the actions of the nut.

HAHA, I finally had enough of her last time down that I began burning her repeatedly until she finally gave up and left. I don't EVER do that to anybody, even if I get dropped in on once. I usually give the benefit of the doubt the first time and chalk it up to not being in position, or not paddling hard enough or w/e. But this chick will straight up get under your skin if you don't just start dropping in. Once she realizes she aint getting anymore waves off you she moves on. Most people are all bark no bite, her pals didn't say or do sh*t.

The afternoon crew however likes to show up and "take over" though, which is really annoying when you're having a great session and suddenly you're surrounded and having to jockey for waves. They really hate it when you get a great wave and take it all the way in and paddle back out.

I always wait a few turns before going back to the main peak, but eventually you just gotta go for it again or else you'll sit there watching wave after wave with dudes dropping in all over each other, throwing beach balls at each other as they go down the line, yelling weird things at each other and doing reverse / fins first take offs and whatever else they consider cool.

Eventually I just learned to ignore the stupidity and just keep catching waves while not getting mixed up in the BS, because if you look for it, you will certainly find it. Oh and the thieves that lurk that spot are relentless and ballzy.

Well, I remember a blonde lady probably in her 40's who was in decent shape and could surf pretty well. The plump girl I can't remember if she had died blonde hair where you could see the dark routes or if it was just dark hair. I just remember her piggy face, i'll never forget it! lmao

People have spent years of dedicated effort to keep this spot from getting shut down in one form or another. Learn the history, learn who the locals are. You show up on a smallish day with a clown car load of your friends and expect not to get hassled? Try going solo or with one other guy and be patient. When you show up with a van full of amped up dudes you're going to ruin the session for everyone and piss people off. It's not about you being a better surfer or not. Treat the place with the respect it deserves and I'm sure it will return the favor.
