Nicaragua Advice

i was in popoyo and i wanted to get out the entire time. Check out the extreme north, thats what i would have done if i had a car. Chinadega

nah, winging-it ok. that air bnb phenom could help. only thing many times its not so easy to drive between spots
due different things like traffic and weather and social problems. i know rivas has a gas station; no doubt others.

 

north nica is a myth.the south is much better.really.they got that big outer reef that looks like pipeline,beachbreaks,reefs,points.the north is for poor people like me just looking to ride some whitewater.there are no good waves in the north.

real talk tho stay in the south if your bringing your wife.its not so bad in the south,up north is rural ghetto fishing villages with some bad apples.u don't want to get robbed while your with your wife.if anything head south into costa rica if your looking for some better waves.

 

I would say you're a dumb a$s if you DON"T wing it. Maybe lock up the first 2 nights accomodation so you don't have to mess with it upon arrival but that's it. Thats basically what I do for all my trips--including a couple Nic trips---and it always works well. Nothing worse than being locked into something your not happy with. Just my 2 cents. Enjoy your trip

 

Best advice is book a room for the first 1-2 nights in the north so you can get a feel for things, then wing it heading
south. To answer some of your other questions, there are several gas stations in Rivas and there is one as you come into town in sjds. South of sjds on the coast road is super rural and bumpy dirt roads once you get 10 minutes out of town. I doubt you will have trouble finding a room for 2 especially if you aren't worried about AC or other amenities. I think Popoyo is at least a 2 hour ride to sjds but I never drove that myself. Grenada has plenty of accomodations so good choice on last night in country

ALWAYS greet every new person whom you meet in context (not like croc dundee in manhattan..) with a
salutation...."hola" works fine. also, ANY person (that you should be respecting) should be greeted or at least
considered with "buenas dias/tardes/noche." after "hola" its ok to add "como estas". a "sonrisa" helps and
know your numbers and "cuanto es"?....suerte....dat rite dare half da idioma.

 

Solid advise. I've always learned to say please, thankyou, excuse me, I'm sorry, good morning/evening, how much is, where is (especially the airport, gas station and the bathroom)lol. where ever I have traveled. Although at times I butchered the pronounciation the locals always appreciated the effort and a few laughs at my expense. Have fun!

 

Granada is awesome---Leon is even cooler in my opinion.....Very artsy and full of music and students. I don't think you'll ever have a problem finding a place to stay

 

North Nica is not a myth. Having just spent 2 months there - village of Aposentillo, about 40 mins North of Chinandega - I assure you there is plenty of waves to be had. The main wave is called the boom and it's the heaviest. There are several other areas near by that get great waves as well. Overall the most consistent waves I've seen in Nica and I made my way up from SJDS checking out all the beach breaks in between. I would try to work it into the trip! Also the roads are fantastic all the way to the beach. Granada is beautiful and worth checking out - the wife will love it!

 

You are talking about the outer reef. It doesn't break until it gets big enough to really hurt you. I bet 70% of people, myself included, aren't truly ready for it so I wouldn't recommend it. Popoya main reef is awesome and extremely crowded.

 

You folks must have much different wives then I do. I've been to north Nicaragua several times and I can tell you my wife wouldn't last 10 minutes. I love the place but way too rural and nowhere near enough of necessities for her. Good news is that she loves the Hilton on Oahu so Nicaragua stays a trip just for the fellas. You won't have any problems winging it. Just watch your stuff and where you park etc (normal things to worry about).
