Don't listen to an ipod while surfing.. that defeats the purpose of "getting away from it all". Plus if everyones listening to their music ppl are going to be dropping in on each other left right and, well i guess not center, but left and right.

I wasn't planning on actually getting one. I was more less curious and would think that the head phones would just pop out when your duck diving under some furious white water and what not.

i have the H2O Audio arm strap, but I use it for swimming laps--works well. I wouldn't recommend surfing with the iPod for the "dropping in" reason stated above.

I too was curious about this and started a similar thread months ago when there were ads for the swimp3 player on this site. Might be good for those days when the conditions aren't really great and there is alot of time between rideable waves, but you just have to get in the water anyway.

I have one.....I occasionally use it when i spear fish. I have used it surfing before without any problems. But, like stated not the best idea and could cause ass whoopings. However, you could get away with it when it's just you and a few out.

I agree it would probably look stupid, but like I said before; wasn't planning on getting one and was just curious to see if it actually worked.

i feel like it kinda defeats the purpose of surfing... like NSsurfer said it kills the whole getting away feeling. just relax out there and have fun and talk to people in the lineup and have a chill session

no i agree. thats my favorite thing about surfing, but it would be a nice alternative like on a sunny crowed saturday in august. it could depend on what mood your in also. i wouldn't use it on like an epic day

in my eyes, surfing goes beyond sport. For example, no other sport has been contrasted and compared as a religion the way surfing has. There was an article in surfer magazine a few years back that was titled "is god a goofy foot?"

The point being, that when your surfing, your one with nature. no engines, no noise, no technology.
That one wave has traveled thousands of miles for you to achieve 15 seconds of pure ecstacy, and now people are proposing to ruin this by shredding down the line listening to in da club? eff that.

The only time you should combine music with surfing is in a surfing video.
Any further and surfing stays at just a sport.

Can't imagine it. Anything blocking my hearing screws me up big time. Even a hood in winter disconects me from the whole experience. Nothing better than finally pulling down your hood on a warm sprind day and hearing the waves instead of that muffled rumble yourve been hearing all winter. Also half of your awareness while on a wave is pure hearing. How can you tell if you are about to get closed out on from behind if you can't hear the wave creeping up? Whatever song is in my head when I paddle out stays there until the session is over. I paddled out one day with the Dora the Explorer theme ringing in my ears, that really sucked.

hahaha yea that's pretty much what i do too. Dawn patrol, no one else out, the only two things I do (besides surfing) are think about sharks (always happens when I'm alone, can't help it) and sing to myself (to stop myself from thinking about sharks!):D

Makes me wonder why I ever dawn patrol anymore on the knee-thigh days... haha, i guess its just the longboard, the emptiness, and the sun just coming up that hit the spot

Although listening to some beats while surfing sounds cool especially if you are by yourself or not much of a crowd factor to worry about possibly not hearing someone else calling you off for some reason.

I just don't want to get to that point, I love music and there are times to get amped and listen to music before jumping in the water and keepin that same music running through your head while out in the session.

However, I love the sound of the ocean regardless if it's knee-waist high or overhead, nothing beats that sound of the ocean and your board flying down the line, hearing your board make the tight bottom turns, wave breaking, cutbacks, etc....whatever. Can't really explain it and people that don't surf wont understand it either, it's a special feeling.
